Luvox/Xanax and grapefruit juice?!

Question: I am currently taking both of these medications. Unfortunately, I love grapefruits yet my medications says, do not take with grapefruit juice. Why is that? I felt a panic attack coming on at about 6:30 and had known I drank some Minute Maid Berry before I went to bed, which was around 3. I know this has a trace or enough of that grapefruit juice. It's the fifth or second to last ingredient. I never drink straight grapefruit juice, just juices with traces of it. Would it be okay if I took half a tablet of Xanax before I went back to sleep? Or would it be to big of a complication with my medicine?

Compounds in the grapefruit cause a pharmacokinetic reaction which accelerates the absorption of the medication. This can lead to dangerous side effects. Consult your doctor or pharmacist but eating the grapefruit 2 hours before or after taking the drug should be enough time to reduce your risk.

You can have grapefruit juice but not when taking your medication. Grapefruit juice contains chemicals that can cause problems with enzymes that break down certain types of medicines in your intestines. When a medicine does not get broken down properly in the intestines, you can end up with too much medicine in your blood. Having too much medicine in your blood increases your chances of having serious side effects.
