I just discovered I had astigmatism, and I was wondering if astigmatism has anything to do with cell phones, or more specifically, text messaging!?Www@Youqa@Cn

Astigmatism is caused by the shape of the eye and all it means is that when you look at a square window you will see it elongated in one direction!.
The simple explanation is!.
The lens inside your eye is like a small plastic bag filled with liquid and the muscles that are attached to lens pulls the plastic and so alters the curve of the lens and so we are able to accommodate (we are able to see something in the distance and when the muscles alter the lens we are able to see something close like sewing or reading)!.
As we get older the muscles get weak and we need reading glasses!.
The power of the lens in most cases is the difference between the front curve and the back curve if you have a minus curve of five on the back curve, and a plus six on the front curve you wind up with a plus one!.
Now if you take a ball of glass and cut a slice in a straight line you will get power all over the front curve and non on the back!.
Now with Astigmatism you have power in one direction only!.
If you can imagine a tin can shaped piece of glass, and you cut down from top to bottom in a straight line you will get power going in one direction across the curve but if you move the piece of glass up and down in the direction of the straight cut there will be no movement!.
Now that's how they correct Astigmatism, which can be plus or minus and in any given direction of 180 degreesWww@Youqa@Cn

No! Astigmatism is not caused by any external factors!. Astigmatism is related to either the shape of the eye, lens, or cornea!. Sometimes, instead of the eye being round, it is more oblong!. Sometimes the cornea is not quite rounded enough or too rounded!. With your vision, the image has to go in and be directed to a specific point in the inside of the eye!. With the eye or cornea being misshaped, the image is directed to a different spot inside the eye!. This is why you can squint and sometimes the image becomes more clear!. You are forcing the cornea into a different shape!.Www@Youqa@Cn
