Umm......interesting.. Is this a philosophical or physical question.? Philosophically speaking it is written (Vedic literature) that everyone is alotted a certain amount of breaths at birth by the creator.. Thats why yogis who control their breath live very long lives.. Therefore life can't be extended past the alotted time.. Perhaps the creator adjusts things midlife though.. I don't know.. (that may explain why you mentioned pranayam)
