Can you take too much vitamin c?!

Question: Can you take too much vitamin c.?
I am prone to a high white blood cell count so my doctor presribed me some vitamin c.. I took over 1000 mgs a day, and thought the more the better, but I was not feeling good.. did I take too much vitamin c, or is this just a detox process.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Taking 1 or 2 gm of vitamin C per day is quite OK and the Vitamin C Foundation actually recommends 3 gm (3,000 mg) per day but most health authorities recommend a lot less.. Never take more than 1 gm in a single dose..

The acidity from ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) may have caused you to feel unwell and this is quite common so most people do not take the acid form of vitamin C but take sodium ascorbate or calcium ascorbate which is a neutralized form of vitamin C which does not give you those acidity problems..

More than 3,000 mg of vitamin C per day is overdoing it although the late Dr Linus Pauling actuallyl recommended 5,000 mg per day but he seemed to be obsessed with vitamin C..

Large amounts of vitamin C will increase your iron absorption which is either good or bad depending on your iron levels and could also cause kidney stones.. Vitamin C is also a diuretic..Health Question & Answer

.. Although vitamin C is water-soluble - any excess is excreted rather than absorbed - too much of it is not a good thing for some people.. This is also true of the B vitamins, which are also water-soluble..

Excess comsumption of vitamin C may cause:
- Intestinal irritation, intestinal gas, and painful urination..
- Skin rashes..
- Depletion of copper from your body..
- Increased absorption of iron by your body..
- Increased risk of formation of oxalate kidney stones..
- Blood tests to produce inaccurate results (e..g.., blood-sugar tests)
- Symptons of scurvy, following a sudden drop in dosage after consuming excess amounts for a prolonged period (e..g.., reduce consumption slowly)..

Everything in moderation and in balance makes for a healthy lifestyle.. This includes all water-soluble vitamins.. All fat-soluble vitamins should be treated with due caution (A, D, E, and K)..Health Question & Answer

it is possible to mega dose on vitamin c but you will not do so on 1000mg per day..
It is a waste however as the vitamin is water soluble and not stored in the body.. Excesses of the vitamin get passed out in the urine.. Health Question & Answer
