Anyone into aromatherapy massage or someone whose taken such a massage?!

Question: Anyone into aromatherapy massage or someone whose taken such a massage.?
Hi. I would like someone who is either a practicing aromatherapist or someone whose taken an aromatherapy massage (full body) to give me some tips.

At the place I live, I don't have aromatherapists. I don't have anybody who'll do it for me. So I am planning to go for a self-massage. I've figured out the composition of my massage oil too.

This is what I want to know:

1) After massaging the entire body with the essential oil blend (in the carrier oil), how long should I let the oils stay on my body before I take a bath.?

2) For testing if an essential oil is suitable for my skin, do I put a drop of the pure oil on my skin to see if it irritates or should I mix it in a few drops of base oil and put it on my skin to test.?

3) Is there anything that can go wrong by giving a self-massage.? Anything in particular that you would want me to make sure.?

Your help is appreciated in advance. Thanks a lot.Health Question & Answer

Giving yourself a massage isn't quite the same as going to get a massage. You won't feel as relaxed.
When testing the oils for suitability for your skin, I would test them with the carrier oil. It's not really necessary for a shower after your massage unless you choose to take one.
An aromatherapist won't be the one to give you a massage as that's not in their scope of practice unless they are also a massage therapist. What you need to look for is a massage therapist who will use aromatherapy. You don't have any spas near you.?
My suggestion to you would be to call a couple of local massage therapists and see if maybe they wouldn't mind using your oil blend instead of their usual lubricant for the massage. I've had clients do that before and as long as I know what's in it, I'm usually OK with that.
The AMTA has a locator service that can help you find a qualified therapist near you.Health Question & Answer

I'm not a professional but me and my buddies, friends, associates give each other massages and that's more fun than a one person job, but when push gets to shove I use an electric massager.

There are various books on aromatherapy that spell out the purpose for the oils. I use a citrus blend to energize. I use a lavender, clary sage blend to calm down. I use a well customize blend for using with vacuum pumping. I don't wipe or wash off the oils I've used in a massage. I usually do a massage like before bed and go to sleep, the calming one, and take in the scents to augment the process.

Yes, put the oil in a carrier to test your skin's tolerance. Lavender and tea tree oil are about the two that can be used neat or undiluted.

Health Question & Answer

Take an online class or read some books on the topic. You just can't start doing aromatherapy. It is usually a 2 year training class. There is much more too it than just testing oils on your skin.

There is lots that could go wrong if you are using the wrong oils, the wrong combinations or whatever. Using too much oil and using them too often can change your body chemistry.

Aromatherapy isn't about having the oil on the skin it is about the aroma- smelling the oils.Health Question & Answer
