I have just finished my Acupuncture class, and am happy to answer your question.

As far as the response about herbs being used because science knows their chemical breakdown- All medicines began as an herb. Even Aspirin began as White Willow Bark. Science has developed modern medicine from the study of herbs and their uses. Without the herbs, the doctors of today would not have their chemically derived poisons that they call 'medicine'.

The Chinese first discovered the concept of Acupuncture and Acupressure from their military during the Ming Dynasty.

During battle, as warriors would become wounded from getting hit by flying rocks and arrows, they would report to their physician that long standing ailments would suddenly clear up after being hit on certain parts of their body.

After hearing this many times, the physicians began to document the ailments that the warriors were saying had been cured by being struck with objects.

The physicians researched for many years to determine how they could help to heal ailments by using pressure applied to nerves in the body. What they found out actually worked, and that was the beginning!

Hope this helped!Health Question & Answer

Standard Medicine has borrowed freely from Naturopathic and will continue to do so, so don't let them pretend they are somehow different.
And "scientific testing" and double blind studies have far more to do with protecting themselves from lawsuits than any sort of science - if they think they can make money on a medicine, they release it - period!
And why does "medicine" keep changing it's practices and recommendations every year.? If their medicine is so great why will all of them disappear in 2 years with another one in its place.? It's usually because it never worked in the first place.
"Alternative" medicine like Acupuncture, herbalism, chiropractic, massage and homeopathy have been nearly unchanged for hundreds of years - because they work!Health Question & Answer

I'm glad you asked because I wanted to but couldn't seem to phrase the words correctly.

This is my point of view on some like the herbs (I had asked about aromotherapy and probably works the same principles). they know the chemical breakdown and associated those chemicals with the scientific world and it should work the same sense. Now the question like you stated trial and error. Well most of the herb products can be used in cooking and well safe to eat safe to take medicanally.

What a bunch of nonsense answers.

What medical science does with herbs is study them, isolate active ingredients, test them for efficacy and safety, refine, test, gain approvals etc etc. They can even synthesize active ingrediants in labs and make the drug much more safe and effective. Using raw herbs is fraught with danger, the quality and quantity active ingredient varies from season to season from source to source - they are in fact dirty drugs. They are provided by people with no proper medical training.

When they tell you that these have been used for thousands of years, that is not evidence of efficacy or safety. The ancients had no idea about epedemiology, or clincial trials. The avergage life expectancy in ancient china was less than 40 years. Since medical science, the average life expectancy now is around 77 years.

Medical science has NEVER borrowed from naturopathy - that is nonsense. Lets see some hard evidence of this. It is a STRENGTH of medical science that keeps changing as new evidence appears. Quack medicine never changes, even when proper clinical trials show zero efficay or even dangerous side effects.

Forget the big pharma conspiracy theories, only desperate types cite that old chestnut. Have a think about big vitamin companies.

I can't believe that someone here says that scientific testing is only about protection from lawsuits - that is an affront to science. Have you ever read a medical journal.? Why do you come up with such blatant lies.?.?.?

Someone also is deriding "chemical" based medicine. This just shows ignorance. Herbs do not contain chemcials.? Everything you eat and drink contains chemicals - this is school science stuff - what is water.? A chemical compound H2O.....

As for homeopathy - please check this link : http://www.ratbags.com/rsoles/comment/ho...
It says it all.

Where are you going to go when you get really sick, say with cancer.? A herbalist.? Accupunture.? No, stick with the latest cutting edge medical science.
