Old wives tales for health?!

Question: Old wives tales for health.?
I grew up in the deep south where many old wives tales are still being used and I have questions about some

When I was young every month my mother would make us(my sister and i) drink a small cup of pure squeezed lemon juice.

My great grandmother would boil down some type of tree bark to make a fever go away.

My family believed that if you got too sick during winter that you should be thrown into the cold river for a few seconds to make you well.

caster oil a few times a year, that one sucked.

sassafras tea and honey.

potato on a stye in the eye.

do any of these have any real health benefits.?

do you have any wives tales that your family practiced.?

Answers:
some of the things I have heard of

according to my Grand Mum's herb book
using raw potato slices will bring fast relief from swelling and itching caused by contact dermatitis and insect bite and the slices are also effective for bruises as well as sties that occur on the eyelids

potatoes are great the alkaline juice of the potato neutralizes stomach acid and relieves upset stomach heartburn and even peptic ulcers warm potatoes applied externally help alleviate joint and muscle pain and improve circulation raw potatoes reduces itching and skin inflammation.

depending on what bark your great grand Mum use
popular bark has ASA in it

the lemon juice is full of vita C

honey is healing

I have no idea on the cold water

people used to believe that caster oil would make you better by making you pass what was making you sick

taking it a couple of times a year would keep your bowels cleaned out.

When I Mum was a child she was not aloud to stay home from school unless she took caster oil
her Mum figured that she would not want to stay home unless she was really sick.
instead my Mum refused to stay home and she almost died because of it she really did not like the stuff so even though she was very sick she would not tell anyone she collapsed as school and they took her to
hospital she no longer had to take it.

Many of the plant based ones do work and that is what many over the conter drugs are based on. However the dose of home remedies can be dangerous if misused.

We just used salt water on cotton balls for a stye. Tree bark was most likely willow, asprin is based on the chemicals from the willow bark.

The cold water thing is shock treatment and I do not like or recommend them. They rarely help and can hurt.

My Dad had a few: tea and honey for sore throats, dandalions for something I do not remember, and fudge just to keep the kids happy.

Well I do know that if you are exposed to an extreme cold for just a brief amount of time it will boost your immune system so that one would work. However being thrown into a river could be dangerous. More dangerous then whatever was making you sick. But running around outside barefoot might of helped. But a very short amount of time. My dad always made us drink vinegar and honey water when we were sick. He was constantly shoving all kinds of herbs down our throats. Nothing too weird though. I know we took a lot of golden seal too. Health Question & Answer
