Alternative "herbal" remedy for my 3 week old?!

Question: Alternative "herbal" remedy for my 3 week old.?
my 3 week old is congested, has minor coughing and had a fever. i took her to her pediatrician and unfortunately her solution was to have us admitted to the hospital. they ran all kinds of tests and came up with nothing. im pretty sure the illness is just your run of the mill common cold virus, because my 2 year old has the same symptoms and is still romping around like nothing is wrong with her. anyway, i don't want to call my daughter's dr. again, so does anyone have any advice on how i can help to relieve her symptoms, primarily her congestion.?.? thanks!Health Question & Answer

Calendula and raspberry tea, steep 7 minutes, and dilute it with more warm water. let come to lukewarm or room temp and put in a bottle. give to your baby often. If your child does not drink from a bottle, then use a small spoon and give more often. this same tea can be given to your toddler also. This combination is good for the symptoms you list.Health Question & Answer

Your pediatrician had all those tests run because it's very unusual for a baby that young to run a fever or really be sick at all since they are typically protected by their mother's antibodies until they are a little older. He was being safe and I would applaud him for that, even if nothing was found. Assuming it is then just a cold, run a humidifier to help the congestion. Beyond that, there isn't much safe for a 3 week old.Health Question & Answer

Your milk is the best remedy. Let her nurse as much and as often as she wants to.

If you are not breastfeeding, take a look at what formula you're giving her. Lots of infants are allergic to soy and can react with what looks like a cold. Some are also allergic to cow's milk. A good, safe, easy formula is this: 1/2 bottle goat milk yogurt (unflavored), 1/2 bottle boiled water, a few drops blackstrap molasses. Stir thoroughly to make it smooth.

If you are breastfeeding, YOU might be eating something she has trouble with - like soy, or chocolate, or caffeine. Call La Leche League. Not only are they the experts in the field of breastfeeding, but they also have great resources to help you with formula feeding, common infant ailments, etc.

An infant can not fight off a cold like a two year old can. You must take this seriously and don't let it go too long without calling the doctor again.
A humidifier in the bedroom can help the congestion. Cupping your hand and gently patting her back can break up mucus inside. Health Question & Answer

When a baby is congested, cut an onion in half. Put a half onion on a plate in the room near the crib [not in the crib, just near it] and it will help "unstuff" her. Health Question & Answer
