Question: How is aromatherapy supposed to work.? Would it work on someone no sense of smell, or a weak, screwy one.?
Answers:
Aromatherapy is supposed to work on your sense of smell. However, it is the applying of essential oils directly to the skin that has the greatest effect on the body. For instance, you can apply a drop of lavender oil to a cotton ball and sniff, whether you can smell it or not, and it will eventually open up the sinuses, slow down the dripping of post-nasal drip, and minimize that sinus headache you have, or... you can apply a drop directly to the temples and gently rub for a much quicker effect. Just because something is labeled lavender oil or eucalyptus, doesn't mean it is the real thing. most items you purchase in Walmart are "fragrance" oils, meaning synthetic fragrances manufactured in a laboratory. these won't help you at all. go to a health food store and ask for "Essential Oils" and read your labels. Truth in Labeling act means that manufacturers cannot make claims that are untrue, so make sure it says 100% essential oil. "Therapeutic" and "Food Grade" are also words to look for on labels, but are not necessary since most people do not eat essential oils.

BTW, most essential oils don't smell pretty by themselves. It is when you mix and blend that things start perk up a bit! (think Tea Tree Oil -- nasty smelling stuff!)Health Question & Answer

Aromatherapy refers to the use of essential oils for therapeutic benefit. Essential oils are the life blood of a plant and carry healing properties that protect the plant from disease.

Essential oils contain properties that are antibacterial, antiviral, anti-fungal, etc. Because essential oils have the same basic molecular structure as the human body, they are readily accepted by our body.

Aromatherapy is a wholistic approach, meaning that it can be used to treat the body, mind, and spirit.

You do not have to have a sense of smell to benefit from essential oils. You can effect every part of your body by rubbing the essential oils on the bottoms of your feet (refer to a reflexology chart). Your skin in your body's largest organ and the essential oils will be quickly absorbed and carried through the blood, boosting your immune system and carrying oxygen throughout your body.

Essential oils, like every living thing, have a vibration (energy). The higher the vibration, the better you feel. This makes essential oils highly effective in enhancing the mood as well as meditation. Thus the body, mind, spirit connection necessary for wholistic healing.

Not all essential oils are alike and should be used with caution. Just because it is labeled "pure" does not make it pure. Most essential oils readily available stores are in fact NOT pure and are certainly NOT therapeutic grade.
