Lots of people will tell you to drink cranberry juice but the juice is usually so high in sugar that it feeds the bacteria causing the infection, even if it does dull the symptoms a bit.

I would suggest Solaray Cranactin tablets, Eclectic Cranberry capsules, or Nature's Way standardized cranberry (purple bottle) capsules. Take the recommended dosage on the label for at least 10 days, even if symptoms subside right away, and for no longer than about 20 days. I would do this and if you do not start to feel measurably better by the middle of the 3rd day, then go to the doctor right away.

Cranberry helps prevent bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract wall. It often starts working as quickly or thoroughly as Rx antibiotics, by the 2nd day sometimes. But, its important to know that if you develop a fever or symptoms worsen then you must go to the doctor or risk developing a kidney infection or worse.

If you get chronic UTIs (or even if its your first) I would suggest buying a probiotic (like Nature's Way Probifia, Jarrow EPS capsules, or Enzymatic Therapy Pearls from your local health food store) and take them as directed until the box is done. These are not for clearing out the UTI but for replenishing your body's good bacteria so you can fight off future infections and hopefully improve your resistance to UTIs.

Good luck :)

Health Question & Answer

I really think Greencheeks gave a good answer to this question. If you do decide to go with Cranberry juice, make sure it has no added sugar. Lakewood makes a cranberry juice that's called "Just Cranberry". It doesn't taste great, but It'll be better than something that has sugar added.

Solaray also makes a capsule that has Cranberry and D-Mannose, which attracts bacteria away from the lining of the urinary tract so that it's easier to flush it out when you urinate. I don't remember what the product is called, but the two main ingredients are D-Mannose and Cranactin, which is Solaray's patented version of a cranberry extract. There's also a formula from Vibrant Health called UT Vibrance. It's more expensive than any of the others listed, but it's probably the most complete urinary tract health supplement on the market. also, remember to minimize the amount of refined sugars and refined carbohydrates you are eating while you have the infection.

Hope this helps!Health Question & Answer

Drink plenty of fluids to keep washing the bacteria out. Antibiotics are very helpful & usually within 24 to 48 hours you can notice a huge difference. Letting a UTI go untreated can lead to kidney infection, so go to the Doc. There is an over the counter medicine that helps with the pain if the doc doesn't prescribe one.
Never let yourself become dehydrated. Cranberry juice helps some in that it keeps the urine more acidic. Get better!Health Question & Answer
