St johns wort and dermatitis?!

Question: St johns wort and dermatitis.?
hello,
i began taking st johns wort about a.5 months ago. a few weeks ago i developed red scaly skin that was irritated and sore on my right ring finger. it kept increasing in size so i went to the doc. for it. She said it was dermatitis of some sort and prescribed me a steroid cream. i have been using it for about a week and my finger looks ALOT better i can close my fist with no pain and before i couldn't. but it seems like one side of my finger is returning to the way it was before and the other side is fine. I really hope it isn't the st johns wort because it helps with my mood so unbelievably. what do u think.?.?
PS - i WAS on wellbutrin before and had a serious allergic reaction to it where my feet and hand swelled up so i had to discontinue that. Just thought that info may help. Thanks!! Health Question & Answer

I think Madame_R could be right... and it sounds just like a nasty reaction my husband had to his first wedding ring, which I promptly replaced with a titanium one! My sister also has reactions to golds and silvers worn on her fingers or neck.

St John's wort does make the sun more damaging to your skin when you take it as a supplement so make sure to think of that before you hang out all day in the sun. I'd use daily sunscreen for longterm benefit... :)

As a topical oil, St. John's Wort is healing to the skin (go figure).

My suggestion is: If a change of jewelry doesn't help, double check your St John's wort supplement. It may contain other active herbs or capsuling ingredients (listed below the Supplement Facts panel on label) that are making you allergic. Take your bottle to the health food store next time and ask the sales clerk to help you find a brand of equivalent (or near-equivalent) strength of dosage that is as "clean" as possible with no other herbs added. Double-check the math on the dosage yourself to make sure it is as equivalent as possible. Try that substitute for a couple weeks at your usual dose and see if the patch clears up. [If your doctor recommends you stop taking it, then you should).

Good brands are Gaia Herbs, New Chapter St Johns SC, New Chapter St Johns Serofin, Nature's Way "Standardized" St John's Wort, Solaray "Standardized" St John's Wort, Eclectic Herbs, Enzymatic Therapy, Country Life "Standardized", to name a few. Check the expiration date before you purchase.

I also agree with the B Vitamin suggestion above, which is a good thing to take in lieu of, or along side St Johns Wort. Many of the brands above make a B Complex that would be inexpensive and great for stress, energy, and mood. Take them with food. *B vits will make your pee green/yellow, that's normal.Health Question & Answer

i think xanex causes this kinda of side effect, too. all of these things mess with your nervous system and, somehow, the skin. doctors cannot explain. i have asked many and done so many searches on the web. so i rely on the obvious and hope i am right. take care of yourself and use common sense because as we dip into a depression, everybody but the wealthy will have to learn old remedies.Health Question & Answer

I tried St John's Wort for a while and I found that a Vitamin B complex worked better for me with less side effects. also, caffeine and alcohol will increase mood problems, so cut those out to alleviate alot of the pendulum swings.Health Question & Answer

I've never heard of St. Johns Wort doing something like that. It does make your skin more light sensitive. But with it being in such a small area I really doubt it's the St. Johns. I had a similar thing once and it was because I didn't get all of the soap out from under my ring when I washed my hands. Figured out it was also the soap giving me problems. If you wear a ring on that finger you might want to take a look at what metal it's made out of. You may have developed an allergy.Health Question & Answer
