Is it safe to use plain petroleum jelly to stop REM?!

Question: Is it safe to use plain petroleum jelly to stop REM.?
Once my eye doc gave me a petroleum jelly based ointment to stop REM when I had an eye injury. But now I just have occassional eye strain from reading and want my eyes to get some rest at night as sometimes wake up with worse eye pain from the REM.Health Question & Answer

Since everything I can find says "If the product is in the eyes, flush with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes", I don't think you should put it in your eyes.
"Petroleum jelly based" means other things have been added, such as mineral oil (as a thinner) or medications. So if it was a prescription, the medications added were what actually caused relief.
Over the counter eye ointments are safe for the eyes and are inexpensive, but may not provide the relief you seek..
Especially if this has been a problem for a long time, or is severe, I suggest you see your eye doctor again.Health Question & Answer

I'm not sure I understand your question. REM (rapid eye movement) is the type of eye movement that occurs during the stage of sleep where we dream. There is no ointment that can stop it, it is an involuntary muscle contraction.

If you get eye strain from reading, perhaps you need to be using reading glasses. Have a proper eye exam and find out if you have refractive problems. You can use cool compresses to soothe the eyes, you can use artificial tears to lubricate them if they are dry.

I think you misunderstood your eye docHealth Question & Answer

well pertoleum jelly is crude oil (toxic) so of course the pain will be worse. you should use a calendula infused oil or a compress from a wet tea bag.which is so soothing and an anti inflammatory. any natural herbal tea may be beneficial to you for eyestrain.
