AH! Make sure to get the bleach off your skin and never try that again!

Zanfel works really well, but it's super expensive. Otherwise, just don't touch it, take an antihistamine like Benadryl, make sure to wash it with soap and COLD water (if there's any oil from the plant still on the skin, washing with warm or hot water opens your pores and allows more oils to get in), and wait.

If it's an extra horrible reaction, you can go to the doctor for a shot of cortisone-- that stops it in its tracks right away.Health Question & Answer

It sounds like you should go to the doctor.

The best natural products to have in your medicine cabinets for immediate use are:
Rhus Tox (this is a homeopathic that is specific to reducing allergies to poison ivy (which is what makes some people susceptible to it, and others not)

Jewelweed Lotion (the brand I know is Rainbow's End) and it must be refrigerated. This stuff is amazing, its specifically for poison ivy, not just itchy stuff.

Aubrey Calal lotion (combo of aloe and calamine)

Hyland's Poison Ivy tablets (contains rhus tox)

Burt's Bees Poison Ivy soap

*see your local health food store for this stuff.
*some people will recommend cortisone creams (like Aveeno) which may help itch only, but I have a suspicion that these creams lower your tolerance to topical antihistamines, leaving you more likely to have more severe reactions in the future. Some people also say the creams decrease your immune system activity permanently, but sometimes like in eye or mouth infections, who has a choice.?

When you use bleach you are supposed to dilute it, but I'm sure it is bad for you and probably doesn't work very well so I wouldn't do it!

Good luck, that's miserable.
PS -oatmeal bath sounds soothing..

Health Question & Answer

Once you have it you can't cure it. You have to wait it out.

Rinse the bleach off pronto, use lots of warm water. It's a poison for your skin.

Once you have washed with soap and water it can't spread, and you're not contagious. It still might appear elsewhere, but this would be where you were already contaminated; it takes several hours for symptoms to appear.

Antihistamines, such as Benadryl will help the swelling and itching. The super hot water will temporarily relieve the itching for a couple of hours.Health Question & Answer

I had to go look this one up. There is no specific treatment for poison ivy. But there are many for inflamed and irritated skin. Regular Honey applied to the spots would help draw out the poison, you'd probably want to wrap the area in some gauze to keep it from going everywhere. Oatmeal rubbed on the skin is said it be very soothing. It would probably take the burn out. Vinegar is an astringent and would take down the swelling and inflammation. It's very cooling when sponged on the skin. It's most often used to cure rashes and bug bites. Get some vinegar and dilute it with water and try it. One to one would probably work very well.Health Question & Answer

I don't know of something that will "cure" poison ivy, but have you tried calamine lotion to relieve the itch.? I've heard of people using that. also, over-the-counter cortisone cream might help. I would also probably take some Benadryl if I had poison ivy, but it will probably make you drowsy so don't take it if you're going to need to drive. I hope that helps. Good luck!Health Question & Answer

I'm very allergic and have had it from head to toe more than once. I always tried to treat it myself, but this last time I went to the doctor and got a shot. I felt better immediately and was nearly over it in a couple of days. The best part was I didn't continue to spread it to other parts of my body. I would recommend getting a shot from your doctor. I really would. Health Question & Answer
