Is ZAND kids Insure (Echinacea & Goldenseal) bad to give kids for prolonged periods of time?!

Question: Is ZAND kids Insure (Echinacea & Goldenseal) bad to give kids for prolonged periods of time.?
I bought this to boost my almost-two-year-old's immune system, now that she is no longer getting the benefits of breastmilk, and we are entering the fall/seasonschanging/cold/flu season here in IL. I was reading in the box that it's not meant for long periods of use, like more than 7 consecutive days, but our season is much longer than that! Is it something to do with the echninacea, goldenseal, or other herb.? It also says, "persons with gallstones should not use." Any insight on why it might not be safe for more than 7 days' continuous use.? Or, anyone ever used it.? Thanks!Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Neither echinacea or goldenseal is meant to be used for extended periods of time. Goldenseal should be used ONLY during illness and not as a preventative. also, I would use it with great care on a child as young as 2 years old.

Goldenseal contains berberine [an alkaloid] and prolonged use can hinder/reduce the absorption of B vitamins, causing neurological disturbances. Berberine in humans can cause blocking of receptors in smooth muscle, blocking potassium channels in the heart, inhibiting intestinal ion secretion and toxin formation in the gut and increasing bile secretion.

It is always a good idea to be under the care of a qualified naturopath or herbalist if you are interested in taking herbal medicines.

There are better and safer things. For babies and children you can use colostrum. Colostrum is the pre-milk fluid that comes when a mother begins to nurse and sets up the babies immune system for life. It is high in immunoglobulins and is good to take year around. Colostrum you buy as a supplement comes from organic dairy cows.Health Question & Answer
