Is it safe to use vinegar as a heartburn remedy long-term?!

Question: Is it safe to use vinegar as a heartburn remedy long-term.?
I currently take Prevacid for my frequent heartburn, but it is so expensive. I've been reading up on home remedies for heartburn and noticed that many people suggested apple cider vinegar mixed with water. Is apple cider vinegar an effective and safe alternative for long-term use.? Or are there any other suggestions.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Studies show that long term use may have some risks including low blood potassium levels or diminished bone mineral density.

You might want to consider all natural Optiflora. It's a two product system that includes a probiotic and prebiotic. It really helped a co-worker of mine that had the same problem and it's safe for all ages with no side effects.

Vinegar is perfectly safe for long term use.

But you need to improve your digestion, and address the problem, rather than mask the symptoms- especially if you've been dealing with it for many years.

Natural recommendations:

Nutrients:
Pancreatin plus bromelain - enzymes necessary for proper digestion.
Papaya tablets - (get chewable tablets) - to relieve symptoms
B complex - needed for proper digestion

Herbs:
Aloe Vera Juice - aids healing of the intestinal tract.
Catnip, fennel, ginger, and marshmallow root all aid digestion and act as a buffer to stop heartburn.

Recommendations:
Eat more raw vegetables.
Cut back on foods that tax the digestive system, like meat and dairy products.
At the first sign of heartburn, drink a large glass of water.
Sip 1 Tbsp. of raw apple cider vinegar mixed with a glass of water, while eating a meal. Consume no other liquids with meals.
Eat fresh papaya and pineapple to aid digestion.
Do not consume carbonated beverages, fats, fried foods, processed foods, spicy foods or sugar.
Lying on your left side can relieve heartburn, as it keeps the stomach below the esophagus, and thus acid-free.

Best of luck.Health Question & Answer

Just buy some peppermint essence from your nearest Pharmacy or health store. Mix half a teaspoonful with half a cup of warm boiled water and drink each morning. To prevent future problems always eat sitting at the dinner table, keep off spicy foods and meat pies, eat at least four hours before bedtime and don't rush it. Drink half a cup of fresh milk one hour before bed. Don't lounge about (lying down) in front of the tv straight after a meal. You need your food to travel downwards from your stomach so excess acid won't be produced. Hope you're better soon. Health Question & Answer

Plain old antacids should do the trick. The ones I buy are 38p (about 65 cents) for 36 tablets.

They're just bits of chalk with a nice taste. Got any chalk lying around and you could flavour it with some food essence.?Health Question & Answer

Food Detectives just did a piece on heartburn. Turns out that good old baking soda in water is almost as effective as OTC antacids.Health Question & Answer
