it cannot be determined whether marijuana causes schizophrenia or people already have it and then self-medicate with marijuana. at this point it is inaccurate to say that any well controlled study conclusively links marijuana and schizophrenia. but as long as they are "researching" this theory they will always be able to tell people that is highly likely--which is yet to be determined.
many researchers and experts believe that a good amount of "recreational" users are actually self-medicating; imo self medicating with marijuana is more beneficial and less risky than taking the doctors pharmaceutical prescriptions which have unknown long term side effects. basically, the drugs that doctors give you are not any less risky than marijuana, they're just legal--legal doesn't mean harmless. and from all the research and personal experiences i've heard, marijuana is relatively harmless except for mild to moderate lung irritation. most people tolerate marijuana very well and have very few seriously negative side effects. it does not cause cancer and it has not been proven to cause mental illness. you would be taking a bigger risk taking something like trazadone or any other prescription drug that offers sleep aid since doctors don't know that it will be tolerable by every patient and its hard to know how it will effect each person individually. with marijuana it either works or it doesn't...although i see where getting the munchies is a very "negative" side effect and should definitely be avoided. <sarcasm>Health Question & Answer

You were already at an increased risk of developing mental health problems after your brain injury. I understand that PTSD may be very debilitating, but marijuana will not help you. It will just further increase your risk of mental illness. There have been studies showing links between schizophrenia and marijuana use.

I have included a link on PTSD. If you are seeing a professional about this, they may prescribe a sedative to ease your anxiety and it should also help you sleep. I would recommend counselling over everything else, but the psychs like CBT.Health Question & Answer
