my mom has a urine infection and she would like to know if theres anything she can take. she's been told she can drink water and cranberry juice but it doesn't seem to work. any tips.? thanks!Health Question & Answer

She needs to increase her vitamin C intake to fight the infection, which is why a lot of folks advise to drink cranberry juice, because it's high in vitamin C. If she hasn't been taking vitamin C, it's usually ok to go up to 1000 mg supplements without any major side effects. If she takes more than that, there is a slight risk of getting diarrhea, but it's not life threatening. Vitamin C naturally works in the digestive system to defeat infection, along with zinc and magnesium. These minerals are best found in leafy greens, so salads would also help.
Vitamin C should not be taken within 2 hours of drinking/eating anything with high sugar content because the body won't be able to absorb the Vitamin C. That means AVOIDING fruit juices that have lots of sugar in them (real cranberry juice doesn't have sugar in it, Ocean Spray is NOT 100% real cranberry juice), so be sure to read the label.

UTI's are so painful. I go to a doctor for antibiotics whenever I get an infection because I don't want to risk the infection getting in to my bladder and then kidney. While I'm on the antibiotics, I also take extra vitamin C and zinc to help my body fight the infection. I drink more water and increase my hours of rest.
During the first day or 2 of infection, I take Genurin tablets to ease the discomfort.

You can go to any pharmacy and get a natural medicine called AZO Cranberrry, it works great. if she's prone to this infection she can take this routinely,it's like a vitamin or supplement. good luck! :)Health Question & Answer
