Whats your Views On 5HTP?!

Question: Whats your Views On 5HTP.?

I am thinking about taking this for Mild Anxiety, Headaches, Stress and Moderate Depression.? Health Question & Answer

Answers:
I have been using 5-HTP on and off for the past few years. It has really helped me a lot with depression and anxiety. When I am going through these periods, my sleep schedule gets pretty screwed up, which leaves me always feeling tired and brain dead. 5-HTP has also helped to regulate my sleeping patterns and makes me feel more mentally alert during the day.

5-HTP is extracted from the seeds of an African plant called Griffonia simplicifolia. It's the immediate metabolite between the amino acid L-tryptophan and Serotonin, so it essentially helps the body to produce Serotonin - an important neurotransmitter for normal nerve and brain functioning allowing for enhanced mood, well-being and healthy sleeping patterns. Serotonin defficiency has also been linked to headaches.

The recommended dosage is 50-100 mg per day, but I have heard of people taking several hundred mg per day. I have never needed more than 1 50mg tablet per day, which I take at bedtime with a glass of orange juice (taking it with a carb/sugar aids its assimilation).

While taking 5-HTP its also helpful to take Vitamin B3 (niacin) to prevent breakdown of 5-HTP to niacinamide and Vitamin B6 and Magnesium to maximize benefits. For best effects avoid taking 5-HTP close to a high protein meal/snack.Health Question & Answer

Alex was on part of the right track... 5-HTP helps by supporting Serotonin, which helps calm most people. In turn, it helps with anxiety and stress (which can cause headaches) as well as depression.
also, it isn't a drug, it's a natural dietary supplement that is what your body naturally processes from the Amino Acid L-Tryptophan... you've already got some in your body if you consume protein.Health Question & Answer

I'm not going to lie, I've never heard of it until I looked it up on google. I would honestly say, unless recommended by a health care professional, I would be wary on any mood-enhancing otc drugs. They're not FDA approved. Kind of reminds me of when I used to take pills with ephedrine back in the day. They made me happy, have more energy, etc. But many people died from it. Just use caution as with any medication if you're going to use it and contact a professional with questions and concerns.Health Question & Answer

i used to take it with ecstasy when i was young, it increases your serotonin levels and makes you happier..in my case higher! LOL
