Several members of my family are optometrists. My grandfather is an optometrist and owns his own shop. He use to own 3, but with all of the competition from places like wal-mart, shopko and costco, he's had to shut down the other two a few years ago. His one shop still survives because he is so well known in town and has loyal customers and offers high-end designer frames and sunglasses.
My Aunt works for costco and has a very secure job with benefits, her pay is also on the higher end because she is a supervisor. My mother ran an optical store inside of an eye and ear clinic for many years and enjoyed working there, they didn't feel the pressure from the other corporations quite as much because they where in a place of convenience for persons who just had an eye exam.
The great thing about optometry is that you can apprentice into it...you don't have to have any degrees or certificates to get started and there are not a lot of people who are specifically seeking this type of job, so it is not as competitive as other jobs. It tends to be very secure there aren't a lot of ups and downs in that field..its pretty steady. if you are thinking about opening your own shop you will need to find a niche to draw in customers a sure bet is to partner with an ophthalmologist for obvious reasons.
