Question: I have asthma, use an inhaler, but don't like the idea of inhaling steroids or whatever is in those inhalers..?
I find it very hard to breathe sometimes. What other possibilities are there.?Health Question & Answer

It has to be one of the scariest feelings, not being able to breathe. Asthma is serious so follow doctors orders. That said, there are different things to try to lessen asthma symptoms. One is a change in diet. Try eliminating all milk products, like cheese, ice cream (very painful choice), and milk and not eating eggs for three weeks. also, add more fruits and vegetables to your diet. Then see how your symptoms are. If you are breathing more easily, add back one eliminated food at a time for three weeks to see if you have kept your symptoms down. Then add back another. That way, you will find which food was the culprit.Health Question & Answer

The person who suggested the Buteyko method is 100% correct. A Russian acquaintance told me about the Buteyko method several years ago and even though it sounded crazy I tried it and it really does work. Holding one's breath also slightly relieves a very stuffy nose -- I can also tell you that from personal experience.

There is an herbal treatment for asthma but it is not less problematic than ventolin and so I recommend that patients stick with the ventolin if/when they need it.

The reason why naturopaths recommend cutting out milk products is not because they are triggers for asthma, but because they increase mucous production, something that asthmatics have too much of in any case while they are having problems. It doesn't cure the problem, just helps not make it worse. Hey, isn't that sort of in tune with the hippocratic oath.? :-)

Health Question & Answer

you could try the Buteyko method to try and reduce your dependence on medication.
of all the Alternatives I've looked into this holds water physiologically speaking.
Many conventional medics now practice it in asthma clinics.
People who do a course in Buteyko technique often reduce their need for medication. Some no longer require medication.
This is something you should do under supervision and you should not throw away your medication.

Although steroids are not without side effect the ultimate consequence of a severe asthma attack could be death.
Current asthma medication is very effective in preventing this.
I have to agree with skepdoc on this point.

While I was at uni my naturopathy lecturer asked everyone who had had their appendix removed to put their hand up. Funnily enough I was the only one.
He said to me, 'Your Immune System is compromised now because of that'

I replied, 'Had my appendix not been removed I would probably be dead. How much more compromised could my immune system be than that.?'

He didn't argue back.Health Question & Answer

Unfortunately the evidence for herbal treatment of asthma is quite weak.
I know lots of naturopaths get people to avoid milk and various foods, but very few cases of asthma are triggered by food allergies.

Your lungs are reacting to things in the environment you live in. It could be dust mites, cat dander, pollens, smoke. The first step in treating asthma is to identify your triggers and try to avoid/eliminate your contact with them. Medications are only an add on if that is unsuccessful.

I have asthmatic patients who smoke, who own cats, have houses full of carpets and drapery who complain about the cost of the puffers, and the concern of steroids....but they won't get rid of their cat, or quit smoking etc.

Asthma is a serious illness, and thousands of people die from it every year. Don't muck around with it !!Health Question & Answer

I didn't either. Go to http://www.glycostory.com/mannalive and click on stories and you will find my asthma recovery story.

Skep Doc is right about not mucking around with it, because you want to breath.

I had asthma since I was 2 because my dad was a smoker.

I also got rid of cats, had an air purifier, negative ionizer, hard wood floors and special matress and pillow covers and still suffered because my immune system was already shot after my second child.

There are such things as altnernatives out there, but most are weak and don't do much. That's because they are not regulated.

Anyway, I've been asthma free for over 10 years now after having it all of my life for over 20 years with steroids etc. So, listen to my story and others. It's real.Health Question & Answer
