When using essential oils, it is important to determine the Grade of the oil. Only Therapeutic Grade oil should be used, not food or perfume grade. If the product does not have the word Therapeutic on the bottle, it would serve best not to put it on the body.

Therapeutic Basil oil can be used on the skin neat, with a carrier oil and taken internally. Basil oil is a phenolic oil which means it cleanses the receptor sites on the outside of the cells - inside and outside of the body. Oils with a high phenolic content can cause a burning sensation to the skin because they are cleansing and detoxifying. Basil oil can be 52-90% phenols and is highly detoxifying. This reaction can be overcome by using a carrier oil such as almond oil, avocado oil, apricot oil etc when applying the basil to the skin. The molecules of the basil oil are very tiny and the carrier oil molecules are much larger. The basil sits on the carrier and the rate of absorption into the body is lowered which lowers the intensity of the oil. To utilize an oil in the bath it is best to use some form of carrier such as epsom salts. Pouring the oil into the salt, adding some carrier oil, then adding to the bath is one way to use essential oils in the bath. Oils high in phenolic content are not recommended for bathing in.

Essential oil molecules are the opposite polarity of water molecules so the water drives the essential oil into the body faster. This is why the water caused a burning, itching sensation. You were being detoxified very quickly.

When you chemically break down any essential oil, it can be likened to breaking down the ingredients of a chocolate cake. Let's look at the cake; cocoa, flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, eggs, butter, water. Consuming the ingredients individually is not necessarily tasty nor is it good for the body for some of them. Putting the ingredients together, baking it, you are rewarded with cake. Individually broken down by chemical constituents there are 2 phenols in basil, 5 alcohols, 2 oxides, 3 esters, 5 monoterpenes and 2 ketones. These chemicals individually can be identified as being unhealthy, like salt, however, when they combine through the therapeutic distillation process of the basil oil, Synergy works and these different chemicals unite and you are rewarded with a Therapeutic Grade product.

Basil oil is antimicrobial, antiviral, antispasmodic, decongestant, supports the prostate, can help restore a lost sense of smell, cleanses the receptor sites of the nose and can ease muscle soreness, stress and tension. Great for headaches as well.

When using essential oils it is best to know the source of the distributor. There are many companies in America that produce oils, not all are therapeutic grade. Two American companies that do produce therapeutic oils are DoTerra Earth Essences and Young Living Essential Oils. There are others.

These are the oil brands that I use to teach courses on Aromatherapy through my school, The Healing Arts and Raindrop Therapy Institute, www.heartinstitute.info. I have taught courses on Aromatherapy since 2005 across the U.S. and in British Columbia.

Essential oils used properly can be life changing. It is a good idea to research the oils you wish to use and their proper usage before using them. The above information is provided as such, information only, and not meant for diagnosing, prescribing or treating of any condition.
Health Question & Answer

There are different degrees of severity when talking about things being carcinogenic. You would have to use a hell of a lot of basil oil to in any danger.

From http://www.essentialoils.co.za/cancer.ht...

"Other compounds found in essential oils that may be carcinogenic is methyl chavicol, which is found in basil oil. This statement does not make basil a dangerous oil, but care should be taken to select the basil oil with the highest linalool content and lowest methyl chavicol content."

What you experienced is more like this:

From http://www.essentialoils.co.za/essential...

"Although basil oil usually stimulates, in excess it can have a stupefying effect and should not be used during pregnancy or on children under 16 years.

Since it can irritate a sensitive skin, it must be used with care on people with sensitive skins."

If everything that might possibly hurt you if used in large enough quantities was banned, there would be nothing left. Health Question & Answer

Anything and everything you take can cause cancer. Go grab your nears canned food and/or packaged food and try to tell me what half of those words mean. You can't tell me what they mean, and I GUARANTEE you they haven't had LONG TERM studies done on them to determine the effect on the human body. The sun, the pollution, cars, cell phones, pharmaceutical drugs, ANYTHING can cause cancer. Scientists and the "smart people" simply label cancer causing items to be known cancer causing items. Trust me, question everything, and question the fact that anything can give us cancer. I don't give a **** about the health benefits of anything. Anyways, I think basil oil is ok :)Health Question & Answer

I think it is better to use it on a tomato salad! LOL.

There are lots of things that may be carcinogenic but are being sold...it all depends on how you use them.

Now Japanese research tells us that linoleic acid is carcinogenic...no wonder the body doesn't produce it...a common fatty acid found in many vegetable oils...and that conjugated linoleic acid offers protection against cancer.
