Learn the art of "deep breathing". I had never known "how" to breathe until a year ago. I didn't think it mattered. But, deep breathing techniques really work to lower your stress and help you relax. Most of us are shallow breathers and don't realize it.
1st..breathe in through your nose (slow count to 4), stomach rises.
2nd...breathe out through your mouth (slow count to 4) squeezing stomach in--contracting the diaphram.
3rd do this 10-15 breaths
I promise it works.Health Question & Answer

Lie on your back and place your hands over your chest. Bend your knees at around a 90 degree angle and let them rest on one another. This is a very relaxing position. Quietly lay there and concentrate on the rhythm or your respiration. Picture yourself sinking into the floor to deeper levels and then finally landing in a peaceful place. Stay there for a while and then "ascend" back to where you "started from." I am not talking about an "out of body experience" or some other type of "new age" type of activity. This is just a fun and effective relaxation technique.Health Question & Answer

If it is just to reduce stress and help with hypertension and not for self realization, nirvana, or other spiritual quest, all that you need is to sit quietly in any comfortable posture, close the eyes and just be aware of your breath going in and out. Do not attempt to control il, hold it in or any such practice. Just be aware.
Curiously, after a few days the breathing becomes longer, and gentler.
Do not attempt to control your thoughts either. They will themselves slow down.
Five minutes at a sitting twice a day is ample.
If you feel extravagant raise to eight minutes.
Do not feel guilty missing a few sessions if it happens so.
