CAM or Complementary and Alternative Medicine is the term used in popular terms. However, there is a big difference in philosophy. Complementary medicine means that you are using a healing modality in a complementary manner to conventional therapies such as medications and surgery. Alternative medicine is when you reject the conventional medicine and focus on healing using non-conventional approaches. Some of these approaches such as IV chelation is invasive procedure. Holistic Medicine is viewing the sum of the whole is greater the parts individually. This means that we as a human being is more than body part, mind, or spirit. http://www.holisticmedicine.org

Integrative Medicine is more accepted term in academic centers where a patient centered healing oriented medicine is used. In this approach, healing modalities are chosen to integrate the synergy of Eastern and Western medicine.Health Question & Answer

I'm using neuroreplete right now. They have a website. It's working for me. There are no side effects unlike anxiety medications.

You can see a naturopath or a DO for supplement information. I prefer a DO because they are often MDs also who practice preventative medicine.

And actually Rhianna-I'm not the "flat earth brigade" however I think it depends on the medicine you are using. Certainly some natural remedies will not work for all, just as some anti anxiety medications will not work for all. If test results show that a natural remedy has significantly boosted your health then it is not just the placebo effect. 5TP and ltyrosine, tryptophan and other natural remedies for anxiety have data and research behind them to prove that they work just as well and sometimes better than prescription medications without the side effects. The tests are done through neurotransmitter testing.

You also need to understand that medical doctors are most often not schooled on natural remedies and are often opposed to them because they know so little about them. Therefore, their only solution is to prescribe drugs. Drugs have a time and a place, but may also do more damage to your body over time. They also decrease your body's ability to fight the infection next time. That is why doctors are not prescribing medicine as often as in past years for children's ear infections.Health Question & Answer

The standard medical treatments are drugs. Drugs and surgery. Drugs are not natural to the body, they are toxic. The body must react to the drug to deal with this toxin and will create a change. But it is forcing the body to do something it normally wouldn't do. Example, a person has high blood pressure and takes a drug. In order to handle this foreign particle it has to lower the body's blood pressure. But there can be side effects, for which normally you are given another drug. This is why a person sometimes takes four medications to lower their blood pressure.

But, this drug does not fix the reason for the high blood pressure. It just covers the symptoms and makes the person feel better.

With alternative medicine it is natural healing. The body is given the nutrients it needs to fix the problem. The body runs on nutrients. No one has ever had a deficiency of prozac, but the body does have deficiencies of vitamin B.

Herbs do work like drugs in that they force the body to do what it normally wouldn't do, but it is natural and not made in a lab and less toxic.

You sometimes have to force the body to do something in an emergency situation but then you should fix the real reason or you will have a continuing problem. It is like having a fire in the living room. The room gets full of smoke. You put a fan in the window. No smoke, no symptoms of the fire. But, the fire is still going to consume the house.

You want to fix the body, give it the nutrients it needs to handle the health challanges and then get the right nutrition so you stay healthy.Health Question & Answer

The problem with the vast majority of 'alternative therapies' and practises is that there is little or no scientific clinical evidence to show it actually works! Much of it is simply Pseudoscience. The placebo effect.

Indeed some alternative therapy which has been prescribed by unqualified charlatans is potentially dangerous. However, homoeopathy for example is not dangerous, being that it is simply sugar pills dipped in water (and for that reason it is also completely worthless.)

It really depends what you want, if you want a belief system rather than a system of medicine..then alternative therapy is the way to go, of course you will remain medically untreated.

(I await the usual thumbs down from the flat earth brigade.)

Edit
The reason Drs are not prescribing antibiotics for ear infections as commonly as before is because the vast majority of ear infections are the result of a virus! Virus's don't respond to antibiotics. You are correct though, antibiotic resistance is a modern day medicine problem. This is more due to some Drs incorrectly prescribing than conventional medicine itself being to blame.

You should know, I have used Homoeopathy myself and have also supported it in the past. I have researched many areas extensively and of course paid attention to the many double blind over studies that have been carried out, all showing homoeopathy in particular to be quite worthless. I understand what you're saying, but there is little or no evidence to support what you're saying. I'm sorry but It doesn't matter how much we want to believe in something, it won't make it happen!Health Question & Answer

"Alternative medicine" is a very general term. It has been used to encompass a wide range of therapies, from the accepted, (nutritional supplements, chiropractic) to the wacky. (cupping, urine therapy) One source cannot supply you with "alternative medicine."

A good place to start is with a big book called "Prescriptions for Nutritional Healing" by Balch & Balch. It is generally recognized as the bible of alternative medicine. With this book, and a local Whole Foods Market, you can find "alternative" remedies to most ailments.Health Question & Answer

alternative medicine is an art practiced outside of so called modern (western) medicine. There are no "alternative medicines" that are labeled as such. Alternative medicine is usually holistically based, using natural products, like herbs and supplements, or ancient knowledge and skills such as acupuncture or acupressure. If you are interested in alternative treatments and therapies, make an appointment with a holistic doctor or naturopath.Health Question & Answer

I've been asked time and again by my patients (I'm a GP) about so called alternative treatments and as a favor to them, I have searched high and low for evidence on their efficacy. Sadly, I have not come across anything that would convince me that they work.

Let's do a comparison:

Conventional meds: Studied extensively, proven to work and relatively safe. Given by professional doctors and nurses who have studied long and hard. Side effects are rare. Do not JUST treat symptoms but also treat cause of disease, for example, antibiotics which kill bacteria, insulin for diabetes, etc.

Alternative meds: Studied non-existent, based on pseudoscience and unproven or discredited principles. Best evidence are testimonials and anecdotes. Given by practitioners untrained in basic sciences and unregulated by government.

Pick. Good luck.

Health Question & Answer

The best one I tried was ozone therapy-but before trying anything do research and find out if alternatives have any back up through scientific research.Or at least find a medical doctor using them. That way there is less chance of wasting your money, which can easily happen.Health Question & Answer

It depends on the source and quality of the product. Like anything, you get what you pay for. Health Question & Answer
