Anyway to treat a sinus infection OTC?!

Question: Anyway to treat a sinus infection OTC.?
I've seen a doctor three times in the past 4 months for a bad sinus infection that just won't go away. I was put on a broad spectrum antibotic and also given some medicine via inhalers. I have no history of sinus infections before this. Now my husband has lost his job and we have no money at all, no insurance and are barely able to feed our children, - I can not consider spending more money on this. My last trip cost me $340 WITH insurance - I can't imagine what it would be without. Is there anything I can do to relieve these symptoms without another trip to the doctor.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Try irrigating your sinuses thoroughly with warm saline (eg. Netty pot) three times per day for 1 week.
This will remove the excess mucus, residual bacteria and viruses. It will also relieve your congestion and sooth your sinuses without drugs.

Even ear nose and throat specialists are recommending saline lavage. Early clinical studies show saline lavage to be a legitimate treament for sinusitis.

also, try to boost your immune system with echinacea, selenium and vitamin C.Health Question & Answer

I had the same problem u did last year. my sinus infection wouldnt go away. someone then mentioned to me the netti pot. since i have been using that i have not had a sinus infection and i use to get them several times a year........below are the pluses that i types right off the box. I use it almost everyday and it helps so you dont get a cold too. IT WORKS!!!

* Removes mucus and pollution of the nasal passages and sinuses
* Helps to prevent respiratory tract diseases
* Daily use relieves allergies, colds and sinusitis
* Beneficial in the treatment of headaches and migraines
* Removes drowsiness, making the head and sense organs feel light.
Health Question & Answer

I would try the netti pot thing posted by the other user. also my friend katie finds that appllying a back massager on the lowest setting to your lower forehead sometimes will loosen the mucus in your sinuses. I am glad I live in Canada where that sort of treatment would be free for the most part!! Good luck and I hope that everything works out for you. It the infection does not go away after a while you are just going to have to go to the er and put it on your credit card because if the infection transfers to you blood, that can be fatal if untreated.Health Question & Answer

I have heard if you have a chronic sinus infection you could get a brain infection which would be very bad. Try some over the counter saline solution and see if that helps. Worse case scenario, the ER will treat you short term, it may ruin your credit if you can't pay, but at least you will be alive.? Good luck.

This is another poster story for universal healthcare for all.Health Question & Answer

They are hard to get rid of. Eat healthy, reduce stress, get plenty of rest.
I researched this once and read that flax seed oil rolled around in the mouth for as much as ten minutes can have a drawing effect.
I seen pepper sprays, and I know horseradish has a profound influence on the sinuses.
Health Question & Answer

No there is no way to treat a sinus infection OTC. No matter what all of the herbal remedy people tell you. Go to a hospital ER and they have to take you and treat you if you can pay or not.Health Question & Answer

try some decongestants and drink plenty of water to help loosen the secretions and get that just out of your sinusesHealth Question & Answer

If you have had sinusitis for this long and the antibiotics did not work then it is very possibly from allergy and not from bacteria.

Either way, these are the things that you can do yourself that will help you:

Avoid all milk products. Stop eating all sweets, chocolate, and peanuts. Stop eating all red meat and NO junk foods. These things all contribute to inflammation in your body.

DO eat as many vegetables, whole grains, onions, and garlic as you can. Eat olive oil instead of other oils in food. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to moisten the mucous in your head and help to get it out. Take an Omega-3 capsule three times a day with meals. These things will all reduce inflammation and reduce sinus problems.

Put one drop of essential eucalyptus oil into your humidifier and breathe in or put the eucalyptus oil in boiling water and make a tent over your head with a towel and inhale.

You can do a leg bath with mustard grains to help pull the gunk out of your body -- 1 teaspoon of mustard grains in a leg bath OR you can massage your face with 30 ml of olive oil with 6 drops of lavender essential oil, 4 drops of eucalyptus and 2 drops of pine.

Hope you feel better soon.Health Question & Answer

You are looking for an alternative way right.?

Vitamins A and C could help. Bioflavonoids too.

For home remedies, try these:

~Horseradish: Take a piece of fresh horseradish, or open a jar of horseradish pickles and take a little piece several times a day.

~Black Pepper: Take 1 tsp. of Honey, grind Black Pepper over it(it must be freshly ground), and take as needed.

~Add 1 tbl. marjoram to one tbl. butter, boil 5 minutes and strain through cloth. Rub forehead, nose, cheeks, and nostrils with it.

~Sip 12 ozs. grape juice twice daily for 6 weeks.

~Garlic: Nature's antibiotic: will help fight infection.Health Question & Answer
