What dosage of fish oil do I give for hyperactive child?!

Question: What dosage of fish oil do I give for hyperactive child.?
My son is about to turn five years old. We have noticed that he has become much more hyperactive in the last two months. I started to give him fish oil in October because we don't eat fish much at all and I realize that fish oil is necessary for us as a supplement. He is also very bright (taught himself simple math, working on reading, was tested as ready for school this year). He is a good child. He is extremely strong-willed, now starting to be defiant, etc. He can sit and concentrate if he is being mentally stimulated. But dinner has become an hour long drama of him bouncing in and out of his seat, falling off his chair, etc. He can't walk through a store without jumping around and falling to the ground. I do not believe he is ADHD at this point. He follows directions in preschool. He can sit through a story although I have noticed he has started moving around a lot more lately which I thought was being overtired at night (gets about 11 hours of sleep a day). He can finish a task if he wants to (we can play chess for an hour) but will take 30 minutes to focus on getting ready for bed at night.

Recently I read about the positive outcome from giving children with ADHD 8 to 16 grams of fish oil a day. I looked at what I was giving my son and it was 415 mg of DHA & EPA total. This is the recommended dosage on the bottle (5 pills a day) of Dr. Sears "Go Fish" supplements. If I were to up that to 8 grams then I would be giving him 96 of these a day! That can't be right.

Can someone help me with this.? What should I be giving him.? Is there a better option in another brand.?Health Question & Answer

Unfortunately, that's one thing that is commonly misunderstood with Fish Oil... it's listed by two different measurements.
Fish Oil is commonly recommended in grams (or thousands of mgs... same thing), but 8 grams is typically given in a liquid form (1 tsp twice a day) because it would be several large pills worth, and that's a tough thing for a child.

Now, the common misunderstanding is that it is also listed in mg of EPA and/or DHA... those are the Essential Fatty Acids in Fish Oil that give it the benefits, but that is not the total amount of Fish Oil.
96 pills of that would be about 8 grams of DHA... but that would be roughly equivalent to 44 grams worth of Fish Oil (because a standard Fish Oil has 180 mg of DHA per gram).
That being said, 1 of those pills 3-4 times a day would come out to about 8 grams of Fish Oil for the DHA content only (not the EPA or other fatty acids). If your son can handle the taste, I'd suggest going for a liquid Fish Oil (1 teaspoon twice a day if it's pure Fish Oil). Good luck!Health Question & Answer

You need to have your son tested to determine exactly how much of any nutrient he needs. You can do this by seeing a Certified Nutritional Therapist that can test him. Balance is the key. It's a real mess in the market place regarding this hype about omega 3 fatty acids. The correct answer is that the omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids should be eaten in a 1:1 ratio. The problem is that the SAD (standard American diet) contains loads of omega 6 inflammatory fatty acids due to the substandard food being sold in America today. The ADHD & ADD problem is basically caused by the mother being deficient in these fatty acids during pregnancy. This is also the cause of ear infections children get because their bodies were not allowed to develop properly due to these deficiencies. Taking prenatal vitamins is and was NOT the answer. Doctors are the absolute wrong people to take nutritional advice from because they have NO clue about nutrition. They are not taught it in medical school and so they practice make believe health by treating symptoms of diseases, not root causes. As a quick test, just ask your doctor what specific items are in the vaccines he is proposing to give your child. I think you will be amazed at the fact he has no clue. Tell him you want to know exactly what is in it with a list of the items. Don't you think he should know this.?

also, if your son has had ANY vaccinations, he could be in the first stages of Autism that is sweeping the country due to these vaccinations being given children.

In 1986, Congress passed the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act (PL-99-660) that among other things required healthcare providers to report vaccine reactions to a centralized reporting system. As a result the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) to which parents, physicians and vaccine manufacturers could report adverse events was created. NVIC has assisted many parents in reporting adverse events following vaccination as many doctors refuse to make a report. It is estimated that only 1-10% of all doctors report a severe health problem which occurs after a drug or vaccine is given to a patient.
To see the VAERS data on people that died from vaccinations. Babies SIDS within 0 to 5 days of being given vaccinations. 3006 deaths reported due to the vaccinations. CNT,

"Childhood autism is the result of encephalitis affecting primarily the limbic system of the brain, located below the cerebral cortex. A relatively few number of cases are due to genetic causes, but officially the great majority are of unknown causes. Bernard Rimland, PhD, founding director of the Autism Research Institute, estimates that there are now a minimum of 250,000 autistic children in America, a 10 to 15-fold increase in the past 50 or so years. Dr. Rimland, internationally recognized as a leading expert in the field of autism, has publically stated that he believes current childhood vaccine programs are one of the major causes for the current epidemic of autism. The US Committee on Children, Youth, and Families has estimated there are now 7.5 million American children with developmental delay compared with 4.8 million in 1991. Of these, 30% are thought to be autistic or have autistic tendencies.

Dawbarns Law Firm of England has published a paper in which they report on over 600 instances of side effects following the MMR and MR vaccines, which were introduced in England in 1988. These include 202 cases of autism, 97 of epilepsy, 40 with hearing and vision problems, and 41 with 100 behavioral and learning problems, the latter in older children. Although British health officials deny a relationship of these conditions with the vaccines, Dawbarns has accounts of over 200 parents who believe that their children were normal before they were vaccinated, and who can point to nothing (other than the vaccine) which could account for the deterioration in their children's conditions. You may also want to take a look at any red or yellow dye's he may consume in his food or drinks. They've been known to be culprits of ADHD. Good luck.

also, a thorough CBC should be able to tell you where he is on each of his nutrient levels. Balance is the real key, the one God intended.Health Question & Answer
