Are there any side effects of taking herbal tablets...?!

Question: Are there any side effects of taking herbal tablets....?
...Ginger Root tablets and Ginkgo Biloba tablets.

Iv been taking them for a few days now, to try and help my bad circulation (Reyaud's disease), and iv had a bursting headache ever since! Could it be the tablets that are causing my headaches.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Very unlikely but you could be sensitive to some of the ingredients. Stop taking the tablet and if the headache goes - bingo. Headache is more likley to be caused by dehydration.Health Question & Answer

As the ever knowledgeable and tasty Rhianna clearly points out there is really no evidence that either of these are useful. So called herbal 'remedies' creep under the wire as foodstuffs in the UK. Pretty much all they need to show is that they don't kill you in the first few days and they are allowed onto the market.

True pharmaceuticals often take as much as 5 years of studies and safety trials before they become available and even then sometimes it takes many poor years and post marketing surveillance to pick up problems that were missed earlier!

I would stop the so-called medication at once. In winter with Reynaud's it is important to wear thick socks and gloves when you go out.

Conventional therapy with Adalat is worth a try, but in the short term it can also produce headache, but at least it works!
Health Question & Answer

Taking herbal 'remedies' that have not been prescribed by a qualified person can actually be dangerous. The reason you are having no effect from the tablets is because herbal remedies just don't work, plain and simple!

There is no doubt that so called herbal 'remedies' have been around for many years, however it still remains a pseudoscientific approach to therapy. There is little scientific evidence to support the claims of its efficiency.

Herbal remedies do contain active ingredients. This is why some of it can be shown to have a physiological effect; it is also why the potential dangers from them are higher than with other so called alternative 'remedies.'

The problem is, many people think that because herbal remedies are natural, they are harmless; this isn't he case. It must always be remembered that there are potential dangers from using home made remedies or those prescribed by unqualified charlatans. The main problem is that are that there is hardly any regulation for this highly profitable industry.

My advise would be to stop taking it.

Thanks GreenChi. Just to clarify, when I said, 'Master herbalist LOL' I meant I am amused by the title, not that I didn't know what it meant or that indeed that one exists. One of my friends back in the states is also a so called 'master herbalist' I have also tried herbal and homeopathic 'medicines' before myself. I think all the herbal potions you have been taking have gone to your head!Health Question & Answer

The worst side effects of taking those herbs in tablet form is that you are spending more money than you should. Fresh ginger, ginger tea, or candied ginger will produce better results and will cost much less. Ginkgo is best used as a liquid extract or as a tea, both of which are cheaper than tablets.

Any headaches that may be associated with Ginkgo would be as a result of increased oxygen and circulation to the brain, but these side effects wouldn't kick in so soon, since Ginkgo takes weeks to months for its effects to become noticeable.

I would be more concerned about other ingredients in the capsules, or something completely un-related that could be causing your headache. Unless the herbs are organic, you may be reacting to chemicals that were sprayed on the plants.

lol Rhianna, its sad how uneducated you are in these matters

Spray - Ginkgo doesn't cause strokes or heart attacks. Its used as therapy to help people who have HAD strokes and heart attacks, and as a preventative measure where there are risk factors for stroke.Health Question & Answer

absolutely. the marketers only highlight the 'good' results, not any of the bad. The ginko B is a strong stimulant, and the wrong dose in a sensitive person may lead to stroke or heart ailments, even a heart attack.

with herbal remedies, there is no quality base, dosage standard, potency test, actual drug regulation based on formula and combinations, etc., so you are playing with your own ignorance when taking it.

Ignorance as far as not being informed fully on each ingredient, how it reacts with you the individual taking it, potency, dangers, etc.

Many herbal remedies are so lax in performing, that when people take one that works beyond what was desired, can get into health issues when using it.

like nutmeg. people don't realize that taking a ----- of it will cause- well better not get into that part.Health Question & Answer

as ever the camps clearly divide.......

the medics rubbish herbal medicines which most allopathic medicines are derived and sourced from...... guys get over it..... you stopped using leaches and bleeding people 100 years ago and then started robbing herbs for your medicines

however the answer to the question is yes the supplements can cause reactions, if you've self diagnosed you may have a bad mix or be treading toes with another med...... or there is something else at play and the brew has triggered it, so go take good advice from a competent practitioner and/or a decent open minded doctor.... neither medical camp has the full answers usually

the quicker they both start to 'complement', doctors and alternatives, and stop bickering the betterHealth Question & Answer

Don't worry, you're fine. The anti-alt med people are just trying to scare you away from natural products because they are threatened by the fact that so many people are turning away from their business.

Rhianna, for someone who 'claims' to know so much...you don't know what a master herbalist is.? LOL yeah, that figures.

Edit - Interesting that you edited out your personal attack on Willow Moon after realizing that Master Herbalist is an actual title. Why are you so angry.? I think you might benefit from some Scullcap or Passionflower to settle those nerves of yours :DHealth Question & Answer

no side effect at all .. little tips take more water to help that table inside your body good luckHealth Question & Answer

your body could be rejecting the meds. or it might be trying to get used to them. go see a naturalpath to be sure though.Health Question & Answer

Listed side effects for Ginko Biloba include headaches, nausea, vomiting and restlessness.
For ginger root tablets - side effects are 'rare', but include heartburn and diarrhoea.
As above re taking stuff without professional advice and disconuing them.
Ginko also interacts with other drugs and can increase the risk of bleeding.Health Question & Answer
