Sprained back for 4 years? ?!

Question: Sprained back for 4 years.? .?
I think my problem started when I got pregnant. (Seventeen) I'm only 4'11, and I got pretty big during my pregnancy with my daughter. But my back has been in constant pain for four years, and my doctors back home always told me it was sprained.

Their prescription was usually take a week off and a bottle of ibuprofen. (btw why is that a doctors answer to everything ibuprofen.? It pisses me off.) Then they would tell me to switch off and on between heating pads and ice.

Is it really possible for your back to be sprained for four years.?.? I've had the last year off from heavy lifting. It seems like it should be over with.

Anyway, I'm pregnant again. I've been trying yoga, switched to a temperpedic mattress, soaking in epsom salts, I tried tai chi like one time.. and my OB GYN prescribed me a maternity belt. (She's really good about me hating pharmacy drugs.) I had to wear one when I was pregnant with my daughter. I also used to be underweight for a really long time, after I had my daughter I went down to about 82 pounds and I'm 4'11. (I'm 116 pounds now, seven months pregnant)

So my questions:
Is it possible for it to be sprained for four years.? (I'm 21 now)
Should I seek some other therapy before or after I give birth.?
If so what kind.?
Will this make childbirth more complicated.? (IM NOT GETTING PAIN KILLERS.)

also my lower back is swollen, and that's where the pain is.

Your back has not been sprained for 4 years. I would suggest you seek out a chiropractor. Find one that specializes in pediatrics because they are also familiar with treating pregnant women. Chiropractors won't use drugs or just say put ice on it. They will most likely manually adjust your spine to help relieve your pain. Despite what some people may say about chiropractic, research shows that it is one of the best treatments for back and neck pain and also for headaches. For years I had a terrible back problem that landed me in bed for days, sometimes weeks.

Finally 6 years ago I bought a massage chair, the IJoy, from Sharper Image (it's also available from Brookstone). I bought it for 700. It is worth every penny. I still get back pain but it doesn't last nearly as long.

After your pregnancy you may want to ask your doctor for codeine. The main side effect is constipation which can be cured with prunes and juice. Tylenal is even worse than ibuprofen in harming the kidneys and liver, so ideally get pure codeine. Health Question & Answer

there is no way your back could be sprained for four years! - unfortunately, since you're currently pregnant, there's not much they can do to find out what the problem is....as they aren't going to be able x-ray you....

as far as dealing with the pain now, perhaps hot or cold packs would help.?...and as far a child birth is concerned, it could potentially cause a LOT more pain to the area - as many women experience severe back pain during labor as it is....

maybe there's a med you could take that would just block the pain in that area during labor and wouldn't affect the baby.? - i'd talk to your obstetrician about it....however, if you seriously are thinking no meds no matter what, then like what about eastern medicine - such as practicing meditation techniques ahead of time or maybe getting accupuncture.?

after you deliver, i'd *definitely* see a new physician about diagnosing what is causing your back pain.

good luck and congrats. :)Health Question & Answer
