Ferrous sulfate label?!

Question: Ferrous sulfate label.?
I am looking for ferrous sulfate for my son, 190mg XR capsule form, unable to find it, but found the following:
some say '65mg, equivalent 325mg ferrous sulfate'
others say '65mg,m 360%'
found a capsule form as 28mg, 156%
What does all the % means.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Please, please be careful.

Ferrous sulfate is also known as iron, and iron-poisoning is one of the leading causes of death among young children. The dosage you are suggesting is a pretty large dose.

I would only use this under the guidance of a well-qualified pediatrician. I mean - really well-qualified. I would call the doctor's office and ask for a nurse practitioner on duty and ask him/her, remind them of the kid's age. They will double-check everything before giving you the go-ahead, and they tend to be more focused than the doctors.

Usually when a label says 65mg, equivalent 325mg ferrous sulfate, they mean that there is 65mg of iron in the form of 325mg ferrous sulfate (iron combined with sulfate). 65mg is the amount of iron in a 325mg mixture of iron (ferrous) & sulfate. The sulfate is attached to the iron to make it more stable in the body. Its hard to say that's what the label is telling you because I can't see it.

Make sure you are looking at the Supplement Facts label on the bottle, it will tell you how many pills are in a serving, and then the amounts listed of the ingredients will be for that size serving (example: 2 tablets in a serving, 325mg ferrous sulfate, means each pill is only 162.5 mg).

***also, the XR means it is eXtended-Release formula, so the iron should absorb slowly thru the system, not all at once like non-XR formulas.****

20mg of actual iron is the average dose for any adult, and it is a huge dose, so giving a kid 65mg is up there.

Please be careful, sorry for the lecture, its as much for other readers as for you :)Health Question & Answer

Hi timer.

The % means the dose of iron in each pill is, for example, 156% of the RDA for iron. So, at 156% the capsule contains about 1.5 times the Recommended Daily Intake of iron.

Why does your son need an iron supplement.?.?.?.?.?.?.?Health Question & Answer
