I had a bad reaction to SAM-e. Will I have the same reaction to St. John's Wort?!

Question: I had a bad reaction to SAM-e. Will I have the same reaction to St. John's Wort.?
I once took a dose of SAM-e (only one pill, one time) and within a couple of hours it literally felt like cats were scratching my brain. I want to try St. John's Wort for bouts of mild depression but I am afraid of the side effects.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
I suffer from ongoing depression and attend a support group for people with depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, etc. I am always amazed how one person is helped by one medication, while other people have very negative reaction. However, these are usually prescription meds that don't apply to you.

In our support group, virtually everyone had tried SAM-e and were disappointed by the results---a lot of money spent and no positive results.

The fact that you had a negative reaction to SAM-e should have no effect on how you react to St.John's wort. Please remember that this herb can take up to 4-8 weeks before you start to feel better. Many herbs act slowly on the body, so don't be surprised if the herb takes a while to be effective.

Other natural remedies for depression are omega-3 oil, trytophan, 5-HTP, and the amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine. Best of luck.Health Question & Answer

I don't believe so. St. John's Wort is a plant and SAMe is synthetic. St. John's Wort is good for many other things than a mood elevator. It is excellent on burns, in higher doses, it has antiviral, antitumor, antibacteria properties as well as pain relief with nerve pain and osteoarthritic pain.

I take 1200 mg 2 x a day when someone in the house gets the flu. I haven't caught the flu since I have been doing that.

For some other remedies you may want to try, go to earthclinic.com - great stuff there - for pets too!

Have a beautiful day
