Are all or most medicines derived from plant sources? ?!

Question: Are all or most medicines derived from plant sources.? .?
Answers:
many are based on plants or even some directly from plants but the problem is to use a medical drug in this country, the drugs must be patented and go through millions of dollars before it is ready to market. since noone is going to pay millions of dollars doing tests and things on herbs one can grow themselves or pick, the drug companies have to change it..sometimes they take the part from the plant they think is the part that works and them isolate it but many known and unknown factors in the plants are cofactors and work syergistically with the isolated chemical..changing it to patent it takes away these helping cofactors..this happens when herbs are standardized as in many of the st john's wort herbal products and this is not as good so seek out tinctures from companies like herbpharm (and use tinctures not caps) that use the whole pant like our ancestors do.

Herbs do not have the side effects that drugs do and they also go to the root cause and not the symptoms (which is often labeled as the disease when the disease lies deeper where the herb corrects it).

so although a few plants like foxglove is the source of digitalis and so froth and though some of them use parts of the plants they are not the same as the plants due to needing to make them patentable but doing so also makes many of them dangerous as well or encourages the need to take more drugs to deal with the side effects which can be as bad as the disease.

Man can't really improve on what God and nature gave us but therte is not as much money in that.

also when drug companies spent millions and then find out their drugs is hurting or even killing people, they often hide the results and knowledge of this or change the results of the tests so as not to lose their money, Once they patent a drug, they have exclusive rights to use it for 7 years and after that generics may be made. It is all about money mostly.

I have seen good herbs work (by good I mean the right herbs used in a comprehensive health building, detoxifying and nutrient building programs that includes other things like hydrotherapy, exercise, good thoughts etc and using herbs that are in the form of tinctures, ointments, teas, (not capsules) and are organic or wild-crafted (not conventional) as these contain 7-10 times more of the plant chemicals (phytonutrients) that prevent and cure disease. also food can be our medicine as there are many potent chemicals in foods especially produce, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, and fatty fish.

Only use drugs as a last resort when nothing else works or in emergencies like one is going into shock or something serious where immediate help is needed.Health Question & Answer

People have been using medicinal herbs for thousands of years. Many modern medicines had their origin in plants that had medicinal qualities.
Digoxin derived from Foxglove, ASA derived from Willow Bark, and more recently Tamoxifen derived from tropical Yew tree bark. Penicillin was developed from a type of mold. Plants, bacteria, funguses all have evolved chemicals that help them defend off various pests that attack them, and in many cases, those chemicals can also be used by humans, with some modifications.

While herbalists claim that plants work better in the whole, and that all the various chemicals (which may number in the hundreds) found in plants are also useful, scientists would disagree. For all the chemicals derived from plants, science isolates the one that actually has the beneficial qualities and eliminates the others. The chemical is deconstructed and analyzed so that its method of action is identified (eg..it attaches to certain receptors, and turns on or off a physiological response) Once its mode of action is understood, then new chemicals can be designed from scratch.

For example, while Salicyclic acid from willow bark was used by Native Americans for pain and fever, it has a nasty side effect of causing intestinal ulcers. Pharmacologists used a chemical process called acetylization, and created ASA, which improved the potency as a pain/fever reducer, and lowered the risk of gastrointestinal complications. Using that chemical as a model, the entire class of drugs we now call NSAIDs (non steroidal anti inflammatorys) was then synthesized in the lab.Health Question & Answer

Any thing and every thing has been used as a medicine. So, plants, animal extracts, minerals, and non-materialistic things like radiations, sunlight, magnetism...

See any good materia medica of homeopathy and also see the several essences and elixirs available.Health Question & Answer

Originally many were, like digitalis from foxglove and aspirin from willow, opiates from the poppy, but now the formulae have been taken apart and the meds are synthesizedHealth Question & Answer
