Is it illegal to dump old medicine down the drain?!

Question: Is it illegal to dump old medicine down the drain.?
Tylenol, Zoloft, Advil ect. I know we've had problems with medicine in our drinking water, but is it illegal to dump it in the sink/down the drain.? Thanks.

And can you give me proof.? Like the website you got your info from.Health Question & Answer

My understanding from historical research, and from the websites below, says that they are still trying to figure out what is the best thing to do with them.

The problem is that our water treatment facilities are not equipped to remove the drug compounds from the water. Of course, there doesn't yet seem to be any information about the medicine after it's passed through the body (if a urine test can identify that you took drugs, then when you pee guess where it goes). Another problem for another time.

The White House Drug Policy page is brief and lists drugs that should be flushed. The rest, unless the bottle says otherwise or your pharmacy will take them back, take them out of the bottles and dispose in the trash, preferably in a container full of kitty litter, coffee grounds, or other similarly disgusting material so someone else doesn't try taking them.

Illegal.? Apparently not yet unless your specific city or state has decided otherwise. We've probably already completely shafted ourselves with the stuff in our drinking water that we can't get rid of, but that doesn't make it right to add more. Unfortunately, we don't always think about how we're getting rid of the waste when we develop any technology (nuclear power, coal, medication, batteries, etc).Health Question & Answer

There is no law against it because the federal government would love to see all of us taking the drugs. ALL drugs harm the body and there are traces of most any drug you can imagine, including viagra, that have been found in drinking water.

The tap water is really a cesspool of toxins and sanitized with chlorine that is killing sperm and friendly bacteria in most people that drink it.

ALL drugs are toxic waste and should be disposed of at a toxic waste dump. It's no different than fluorescent lamps (even the compact ones) because they are loaded with mercury and that is considered toxic waste. Neon has mercury in it and when it is broken, their is a law that says you must contact hazzardous waste disposal to clean it up.

The land fills are loaded with old fluorescent tubes now and with new laws mandating the use of compact fluorescent lamps, the mercury problem is only going to get worse, not better. Fasten your seat belts.

It's just more convincing evidence that evolution does exist, but in reverese. All animals came from humans and all you have to do is look at politicians, lawyers, doctors, and drug dealers to prove this.

Last year the was a report in my area (NJ) that traces of prescriptions drugs appeared in the drinking water.

The argument was how did these medications get into the drinking water.

To be on the safe side, flush all of your old medications down the toilet rather then down the sink/drain.Health Question & Answer

I don't have a website source, but I don't think it is illegal. Why would it be.? Besides, we don't drink last weeks brownies that went down the insinkerator, so medicine poured down the drain won't affect the water you drink, I think.Health Question & Answer

you are supposed to flush it, but that does get into the water system. sometimes you can take them to the pharmacy and they will dispose of them for you.
its not illegal. we just went through this at a commanders call in the air force.Health Question & Answer

Not sure about being illegal, but when I worked in a pharmacy, the procedure is to drop them into a cup of Coke and let that break them down before flushing them down the toilet.Health Question & Answer
