Can you become an MD as well as an ND?!

Question: Can you become an MD as well as an ND.?
I'm looking to see are there any schools offer a program where you can become licensed medical doctor as well as a naturopathic doctor at the same time.?Health Question & Answer

I don't know why people are telling you that you can study both at the same time, you can't, unless you take on the two individual courses at the same time. The work load would be huge for a start. also, as a graduate of a Natural Medicine College(with a Degree) I found the two (scientific and natural) medicine almost to be at war with one another. It's a great idea for a MD to have some knowledge of natural medicine, because the course will teach the philosophy of medicine which you won't get with 'scientific' medicine, it also teaches the body as a whole, rather than a bunch of machines that all work independently of each other. There are so many differences in the thinking of these two types of medicine that I don't even know where to begin. If you want to do both courses, some subjects do count for credit in the other, things like anatomy, diagnosis of disease, biology-things like that. I think what you are planning to do is amazing and commendable, it's just a pity more 'doctors' don't share your point of view. Only be ready for HOSTILITY from each discipline, as 'scientific' medicine looks down it's nose at traditional practices, and alternative healers think 'scientific' doctors are unfeeling, poorly trained butchers who are responsible for more problems than they solve. See the problem.? Good luck with this one- you're gonna need it. (also to the answer at the top of the page-racist.? Did I miss something.?)Health Question & Answer

Yes, you absolutely can...

If you're planning to do both, it's probably best to do the MD and then the ND because you can get credit for courses already taken and it'll save you a lot of time and money. It's possible to do it the other way 'round (ND then MD) and still get credit for some of the courses, but it's likely to be more challenging to have the already-completed courses approved.

In North America, check the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges to find a school that is approved by the board and will allow you to register as a licensed ND. www.aanmc.org

also be aware that the American Medical Association has, in the past, sanctioned some MDs for expanding into Naturopathic Medicine and it has generally been frowned upon. However, that's changing as people become more informed about NDs and our training.

In Ontario, the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (www.ccnm.edu) attends the Ontario Med Schools weekend and the Med School "olympics" every year. Good times building bridges!Health Question & Answer

The short answer is Yes! Actually becoming an ND (in my opinion) would be much better than becoming an MD. The AMA approach is to prescribe pills or do surgery to fix things that go wrong, whereas the ND is more concerned about causes and fixing the cause rather than the symptoms. So you have to decide if you would rather fix causes or fix symptoms.

According to JAMA, the 3rd leading cause of death in the U.S. is medical doctors. The 4th leading cause is prescription drugs. So why would you want a license to kill.?

Much better to become an ND or DO (osteopathic doctor) or even a Chiropractic Doctor where you actually help people get well and stay well rather than kill them. Comprende.?

A good naturopathic doctor, while very skilled, may still not enjoy the same types of perks as other conventional doctors. Naturopathy is still struggling to get noticed in the same aspects of medicine as conventional drug-based treatments.

Doctors in naturopathic medicine are, however, highly respected in their fields and are considered to be very successful in their expertise. A good doctor in this field knows that he or she is making a difference day after day.

In essence, a naturopathic doctor practices medicine that is designed around assisting the body's own capacity to recover and restore its own health. Naturopathic medicine or naturopathy is one of the newer schools of medical thought and philosophy.

Typical medical treatment in this field is based on employing a variety of modes. These modes are represented by elements such as acupuncture, herbalism, whole foods treatment, aromatherapy, and hydrotherapy. With these elements, treatment in this field may also have a reliance on forms of psychological treatments to help prepare the mind and assist with overall recovery.Health Question & Answer

Yes. I had a doctor that was both. I liked him because I agree with healing the whole body and not just the symptoms. I commend you on such a noble choice of wanting both backgrounds.

I know that Portland, Oregon has one of the oldest naturopathic medical schools, NCNM (National College of Naturopathic Medicine) and nearby is a medical school, OHSU (Oregon Health and Sciences University).Health Question & Answer

You just have to go to normal medical school - but there may be one with a specialty.
But I doubt it since medical doctors are so against natural medicine. They learn how to distribute drugs - that's about it and they are against anything that gets in the way of that.Health Question & Answer
