Question: Has anyone here ever been to rehab to become sober, I have a few questions if you don't mind answering ...?
I'm looking to be a Addiction medicine specialist.
I want to work in the counseling aspect of the Field, just wondering if anyone here has been to a rehabilitation center, I have a couple questions.

* Do you find it easier to talk to people that have had the same experience as you.? Say if I went in there to talk to you, but I had no drug abuse experience whatsoever, would you feel like I shouldn't even be there trying to talk with you.?

*Do you find it easier to talk with people that have had the same experience, or people that have no idea what it is like to go through what you are going through.?Health Question & Answer

A very relevant question my dear. A resounding yes to the experienced counselor. I really hated the text book babies. I found them to be condescending and naive. They didn't understand withdrawal as a physical entity with a mind of it's own. Their attitudes and approaches were annoying and narrow. On more than one occasion they actually made me angry. In my experience it was much easier to talk to someone who you felt really knew where you were coming from. I found that the 'text bookers' tended to over simplified things and seemed to have a need to pigeon hole everyone. This is however only my experience.Health Question & Answer

I don't necessarily feel uncomfortable talking to someone who doesn't have the same experiences. All the counselors in my rehab program were former addicts. I had one counselor and another facility that wasn't. What I appreciate about the counselors who share the same experiences. They know when you are full of crap. When you are b.s.ing your way through it. They call you out. The other counselor was very..and how do you feel about that.?..that must be very hard for you....

I think that you can be a great counselor even without the personal experience.Health Question & Answer

Basically it is up to the person that is getting the counseling. Yes, those who have been through it personally have a better understanding of what a person is going through. But proper training will do the same thing. And the more they deal with addiction problems on a personal level with an addict, the more experience they will get. A friend of mine does counseling, had absolutely no experience personally, but has connected with her patients and they and she are doing very well. An addiction is an addiction. Whether it is an eating disorder, or addiction drug disorder or addiction or alcohol disorder or addiction..it is a matter of admitting there is a problem, and then doing something about it. And with the help of counselors it can be dealt with.Health Question & Answer
