It depends on the condition you are treating. Aspirin is a perfectly natural plant based drug and has been used effectively for hundreds (if not thousands) of years.
But if I had an aggressive cancer I would not be wasting my time taking tree roots and crushed berries. At times like that you need chemotherapy. There is no 'one size fits all'. If you can deal with a headache or back pain with a herbal remedy that's fine. But, remember that not all naturally occuring substances are good for you. Tobacco for example, or cocaine. So in answer to your question, it depends on the symptoms and the cause.
