A 100.6 fever, chest congestion and no insurance. What should I do?!

Question: A 100.6 fever, chest congestion and no insurance. What should I do.?
I've had a cold for over three weeks now, with symptoms evolving at the end of every week since day one, from nasal congestion, runny nose, to hoarseness mid-nasal congestion, and now to fever, chest congestion, lightheadedness, nausea, headaches and sensitivity to light.

It's not so bad tonight as Mucinex helped with the chest congestion, but I still have a fever. My mom told me to take some of her amoxilcillin or risk landing in the hospital with pneumonia. I convinced here taking her antibiotics is not a very bright idea, as improper dosages may infect me with a bacteria that the body's immune system cannot fight and could be fatal. So, that said, should I just keep taking Mucinex and Thera Flu and try to ride this out, or should I charge my doctor visit to a card. (I really don't like this idea) I probably won't even get insurance coverage until next month, bah.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Amoxilcillin is not going to give you a bacteria, it is a form of penicillin, which is an antibiotic. You can take this without concern for infecting your immune system and unless you take a dosage of 3 times what is recommended for an extended period (a week or more) no concern for damage to your system at all. Unless you are allergic to the medication.

However, you indicated that Mucinex helped, so take that and take something for the fever (i.e. Tylenol, aspirin) Your choice.Health Question & Answer

After three weeks I would be concerned with pneumonia. It might be worth the $ to get checked up on. In the mean time, get lots of rest, eat good, healthy foods and vitamins, lots of vitamin C (although too much will give you the runs!). Use a humidifier if its hard to sleep at night because of horseness or dry throat.Health Question & Answer

emergency room if ur fever goes above 101 other than that i would recommend going to the doctor and dont take ur moms pillsHealth Question & Answer

I do not recommend taking mom's antibiotics <abx>. She should be taking all of her dosage to make sure she is clear of her infection and not creating 'super' bugs. Taking abx if your not medically trained is a bad idea because certain abx take care of certain germs. It sounds like your getting worse since you now have a fever. You might have a secondary infection happening. Yes, going to the MD is expensive especially without insurance but what good is money if your dead.? You can try to ride it out but have someone watch you closely so its a bad idea if you live alone. The light sensitivity, headache, and such could be signs of a serious type of infection. I would recommend the trip to the MD. People still die from the flu and other basic infections. It's your body, only you know how sick you are. Listen to your body it will tell you if you need to go. Good luck and get well soon.Health Question & Answer

Will you please listen to your mother. Amoxicillin is perfectly good for your condition. You just have to take it for the full course.Do not stop taking it after just a couple of days when you start to feel better. That's what causes mutant bacterial strains to get out of control.
Or better still go to the doctor and let him/her prescribe an antibiotic. He/she will know what the prevalent type of bacteria are around and will prescribe something specific for that.
God bless and hope you feel better soon, you sound miserable.Health Question & Answer
