I was prescribed a high dose of antibiotics for an infected tooth, my question is that if that much medication is going through my body does that mean that it will kill any other infections that I might have.?

Antibiotics are effective against certain bacteria and not against others. If you would happen to have an infection in two different areas of the body caused by the same or different bacteria that are susceptiblele to the antibiotic then -yes it could kill an infection in more than one area. Another consideration is where the infection is, sometimes it is hard to treat infections in some tissue, you just can't get the antibiotic to where it needs to go. That is why you will see oral, iv, im, topical, otic and ophthalmic preparations.
Side effects such as diarrhea can be because the antibiotic is killing bacteria that are normally present in a healthy GI tract. This throws off the natural balance of good and bad bacteria allowing some to overgrow.Health Question & Answer

Antibiotics kill only bacteria and have no effect on viruses. So it could, but it doesn't mean it will. Some bacteria are sensitive to only one or two kinds of antibiotics and will not respond to any others. If it is a broad spectrum antibiotic that you are taking, it will kill all bacteria that are susceptible to it. Which would probably be most. That's all bacteria, good and bad. Normally 1-2% of your total body mass is bacteria, most of which is in your intestines. These will die too if they are sensitive to the antibiotic. You might get a little touch of diarrhea for that reason, but they will come back as soon as you are done taking the drug. So to answer your question: Maybe. It will kill only the bacteria that are susceptible to that specific antibiotic. Some bacteria will die others will grow in their place. Usually antibiotics for the mouth are not too effective against bacteria in the rest of the body.Health Question & Answer
