Could my daughter really have a heart murmur?!

Question: Could my daughter really have a heart murmur.?
Hi I took my 3 yr old daughter to the doc today because she was unwell. The doc told me she had a heart murmur and was very adamant it was there.
She was sent for urgent blood tests and a chest xray. We were then sent to a paed whom advised us she had a chest infection. The blood showed a slight rise in either the white or red blood cells, but he said that was prob due to the infection. He couldn't hear a murmur and said because her heart rate was so high it could be why he couldn't hear or it could have mimicked what the previous doc originally thought was a murmur.
My worry is when the paed told the doc he suspected the mimicking of the murmur, she was not happy with that answer.
So is it or isn't it.? I have one doc saying he doesn't think so and another saying she is sure there is one.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
It used to be that using a stethoscope to listen to a murmur was a magic art especially for someone with a pulse of 120. (Seriously, I try hard to learn all those different type of murmur for exam purpose only) But today, all we do is to say it is normal and abnormal, and sent the patient for a transthoracic echocardiogram.

Since your kid is about 3, there could be some congenital condition behind that murmur. If left untreated, it could progress to heart failure. So in your case, try asking for a transthroacic echo. That's will elucidate the underlying cause.

And by the way, having heart rate of 122 is normal for a 3 year old. The range of Age 3-4 years is about 73-137 bpm according to emedicine

You are getting 2 different answers because a Heart Murmur is so hard to Diagnose, but i heard and picked one up doing clinicals that even the Cardiologist couldn't LOL but yeaah they are very normal and popular and most ppl live their whole life and not even know that they have it and BTW do you know what your Daughter's Heart rate and BP were off hand.?Health Question & Answer

I would ask to take her to a paed cardiologist for a thorough examination...that will give you the correct answer once and for all...I would also wait until she is well to take her.

A Murmur is not always bad news...it can also be innocent...dont get too worried either way until a clear yes or no has been decided.

I have/had a murmur and 2 of my 3 children have murmurs...we have an inherited heart-valve condition that gives us this murmur...its not that bad really. We all lead totally normal lives.Health Question & Answer

she could have heart murmur, or it could be something else...

in this case, i would have the doctor write you a referral to a pediatric cardiologist, if you have one in the area. if not, i'd call a cardiologists office, and give them a BRIEF explanation, and see who they recommend.

i have had a murmur that was identified soon after i was born, as does a close friend. my murmur, along with the accompanying defect, cause me no issues other than making it necessary for me to take antibiotics before treatments (dental cleaning/work, surgery, etc.). my friend had to have open heart surgery when he was eight.

it will only help your daughter for you to have confirmation one way or another.Health Question & Answer
