The doctor did a throat culture from me and it came back positive for strep and I refuse to take an antibiotic because of the side effects.? Can I use an over the counter medicine like Theraflu.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Strep throat is a bacterial infection. The ONLY way to get rid of it is to take antibiotics EXACTLY as your doctor prescribes. If you don't, the bacteria could spread and cause a lot more problems, and may become resistant to antibiotics. You NEED to take antibiotics. Why go to the doctor if you refuse to follow the doctor's advice about treatment.?

(Theraflu is an OTC treatment for flu, which is a virus, not a bacteria. Theraflu will NOT help your strep throat.)Health Question & Answer

No. It is a bacteria, and the only way to fight a bacteria is with an antibiotic. (Well, technically, your body may eventually fight it off on it's own, but it may cause other health problems.) also, take the whole prescription. I went to the doctor a couple weeks ago for a soar throat of about 5 days. I was given an antibiotic, I went home started the prescription, and a couple of days later I started to forget to take them, so I quit. Well, almost two weeks later, I had a soar throat again, and this time by nighttime, that day, it almost felt like my throat was closing off, and it hurt really bad. If it got any worse, I was considering the ER. It freaked me out a little. I started back on my antibiotic immediately, and my throat started getting better on day 2, and I plan to finish the prescription I have. I have never taken antibiotics too much, so I hope this works for me. It is possible I could have made the bacteria stronger by doing what I did. Take the antibiotic.Health Question & Answer

Well, take the antibiotics, nothing else will combat the disease. Strep isn't something to mess around with-- it can actually spread and get into other organs besides your throat, which is why taking antibiotics is important. Can actually damage the heart, which is a somewhat important body part. I once got it in my knee joints, and was almost immobilized; still have problems years later in the joints due to the damage. Take the dang antibotics so they will combat the strep. The side effects are far better than death or permanent tissue damage.Health Question & Answer

The Theraflu will alleviate the symptoms, but to kill the bacteria causing the infection, the antibiotic is required. Take the antibiotic, because untreated strep throat can possibly result in more serious sequelae.Health Question & Answer

no it might getting worse you need to go and ask a doctor before you do that.Health Question & Answer
