I was told it is unhealthy to breath air thru your mouth while sleeping?!

Question: I was told it is unhealthy to breath air thru your mouth while sleeping.?
Why is this.? I asked a question regarding snoring and sleeping and one of my contacts said its unhealthy to breath air through your mouth...? Please tell me why. I don't sleep well either because I can't physically close my mouth due to an over bite but I will have it fixed soon. So please explain it to me why this statement would be true.?Health Question & Answer

well let me see, 1st that as the men above me said that it protects from allergies, and ok not everybody has an athlete lungs, I mean today kids get asthmas from nothing.../:)
, second I think that it dries ur whole throat out, which can make it red, which can cause discomfort while sleeping
And how come we were taught as early children in gym class, 2 inhale through the nose...ok but curios about seeing more detailed answersHealth Question & Answer

Please dont listen to your friend, sleeping with your mouth open is not unhealthy, thats a load of ....
The tenuous basis your friend used is probably that breathing thru your nose, the air passes over microscopic hairs in your nasal passage, these hairs act as a filter for any dust in the air. So your friend has probably used logic to deduce that since your mouth does not have these hairs, then you would inhale unfiltered air through your mouth. He/she further thinks this is bad for you because of all the (allegedly) bad stuff thats floating about.
If your friend applied this style of reasoning to other parts of their life, they would never go across the road, because the cars on it can knock you down and hurt you.
Essentially, while there are dust particles, etc, in the air, breathing them in will not be harmful unless you suffer from an advanced state of a chronic respiratory condition such as Bronchitis.
The human race - and men in particular - have been snoring through the night for centuries, and in far less sanitary conditions than your bedroom, so dont worry.
Oh and another thing, if breathing through your mouth is bad for your health, how come some of the fittest and healthiest people in the world make a living in an environment where they HAVE to breathe through their mouths.? I'm talking about long distance athletes, running , say the New York of London marathons, 2.5 hours or more of inhaling city fumes through their mouths, at higher concentrations than you would in your sleep. Last time I looked, these people were fit and well. So tell your friend to relax, forget the pseudo health garbage we are fed by the media and use some common sense.Health Question & Answer

I'm not sure the exact medical reasons. But, I know that I've got a cold, and can only breathe through my mouth, and it is causing me to have a severe sore throat in the mornings.Health Question & Answer
