Could I have an underactive thyroid?!

Question: Could I have an underactive thyroid.?
I have been on weight watchers since June last year and am basically still the same weight as when I started - with nearly a stone to lose. I have previously got to goal twice, so I know the diet works. I have stuck to the diet pretty much with the usual little cheats here and there. I also exercise for at least 2 hours a week doing body combat, which is very high energy. So, does anyone (particularly any health professionals please) have any ideas why the weight is not shifting.? My friend has suggested it could be my thyroid or even diabetes which has scared the living daylights out of me!Health Question & Answer

Do you have any symptoms, such as unexplained tiredness, excessive thirst, changes to your skin or hair.? If nothing has changed and you are other wise healthy, maybe it is the diet regime that doesn't suit you.
I am not a medical professional but my mum has an under active thyroid and she has a range of signs and symptoms when it is playing up, not just weight gain.
If in doubt, talk to your GP. They may be able to help you with dietary and exercise advise. You could try hypnotherapy for weight lossHealth Question & Answer

I imagine you would have other symptoms if it was your thyroid. When mine went wrong I was also very tired, cold all the time, had joint pain and my skin and hair changed. As everyone else says a simple blood test will check your thyroid levels.

Perhaps you need to look at your diet. Are you writing down every little cheat.? Have your portion sizes crept up. I used to go to Weightwatchers and my leader used to say that everyone's portion sizes used to creep up over time. Perhaps you need to change your exercise routine and do something different. Maybe you have been doing the same exercise class for too long. Have you thought about splashing out on a session with a personal trainer.Health Question & Answer

You may just be swapping fat for muscle!

Diabetes is easily checked (you can even get this done at some pharmacies now) they just need a drop of blood (they can check your pee too but I don't think its as reliable.

Thyroid is a bit more contentious there is a famously unreliable blood test that your doctor can do, but there are lots of signs, check out the websites for symptomsHealth Question & Answer

A simple blood test at the doctor's will confirm or rule out any of those possibilities.Health Question & Answer
