Why do I get light headed after seeing blood or talking about the circulatory system?!

Question: Why do I get light headed after seeing blood or talking about the circulatory system.?
So we are in Biology talking about it when it slowly makes me feel light headed and dizzy. I begin to lose strength to the point where I can't even hold my pencil. I just ask the teacher if I can go outside to get some fresh air (that usually solves the problem). But one time I went to go see a body exhibit and the same thing happened. However, it didn't stop. I began to lose color in my vision and things were of a darker hue, mostly everything was in light red, black, and white. Sound was heard distant whenever someone talked to me. I knew I was about to pass out, luckily, I was rushed outside. Drinking water made me feel better soon. Biggest scare of my life. Can anyone explain this phenomenon.Health Question & Answer

The fear of blood is called hemophobia -- a term taken from the Greek words "haima" (blood) and "phobos" (fear). Like any phobia, hemophobia involves an irrational fear, where the person's emotional and psychological reaction overpowers the mind and can trigger serious physical symptoms.

Those who suffer from hemophobia experience an extreme fear of and reaction against the sight of blood. Those with this condition can experience a number of symptoms, including dizziness, disorientation, fainting, breathlessness, excessive sweating, and even anxiety attacks.

In many cases, those with hemophobia also fear needle injections. In most cases, they suffer from the fear of injury or death.
Causes of Hemophobia

Perhaps the leading cause of hemophobia is trauma associated with a horrific event. It could be a recent injury, accident, or tragedy of some kind or something from one's childhood. In such situations, it's often an association issue, where the person subconsciously associates blood with a deep-seated fear or memory with which their mind is unable to confront or process.

There may also be genetic factors with regard to hemophobia, in that genetics play a role in many anxiety disorders.
Treatment of Hemophobia

One of the best ways to cope with fear is through information. A person suffering from hemophobia can educate himself or herself on the nature of blood. One of the best ways to minimize the emotional reaction one has toward blood is to demystify it. This advice works on virtually all phobias, in fact.

In the case of blood, a person with hemophobia could study biology and human anatomy, and try to see and understand the human body as a machine. The more objective he or she can be in studying blood, the easier it will be to remove any fear.

In addition to educating oneself through reading and diagrams, a person with any kind of serious phobia should consult with a trained professional. Such a professional will be able to suggest the best treatment.

Such treatment sometimes involves psychiatric evaluation, gradual exposure of the patient to blood (so that the individual can slowly overcome his or her phobia), and/or medications.

With the proper amount of education and the right treatment, as prescribed by a trained professional, you can be on your way toward overcoming your fear of blood.Health Question & Answer
