Mine was described as sponge like - so perhaps quite similar, There was no lump to feel but on the scans it showed up as a white, grainy patch. The treatments for breast cancer are very good - so whilst it is normal to be concerned please dont panic. If the cancer has not spread then her chances of survival are fantastic. I am seven years down the road now, and life is good.

Good luck to you and your mum, I wish you all the best.Health Question & Answer

You must be really worried. Not all masses are hard. Did your mother had the surgery and sent the specimen for biopsy and histopathology to confirm the diagnosis.? But prior to deciding surgery did she have mammogram and breast ultrasound done.? I have a colleague who had a breast mass but when we palpated it, it was flat and feels different. Breast cancer now when early diagnosed and treated there is a higher chance of cure as long as the patient is cooperative with the treatment because it is not easy. I have seen it to her before.Prayer will also help if you believe. Goodluck. Your mom needs support and needs you more now than ever.Health Question & Answer

Please don't be put off by his description. Surgeons often use ordinary words to describe things, like a cyst the size of a nut/orange, or an orange peel effect (for a pitted skin).
It's just a way of describing whether something is large, small, soft or hard and there is no significance in his choice of word.
If he came out with some long Latin name it would scare you more"
I am sorry your Mum has had breast cancer, you must be sensitive and scared. Help her fight back to full recovery.Health Question & Answer

Usually the mass is very hard. I have had it twice and have survived so far. You really should ask when she goes back for her follow-up appointment if it is bothering you. My very best wishes to you all.Health Question & Answer
