Do I have a cold sore?!

Question: Do I have a cold sore.?
I've never gotten a cold sore before. I have a pretty good idea who would have given the virus to me, but she says she doesn't get them. So I have reason to believe that I don't have the virus.

My lip now has a sore. It is round and perhaps half a centimeter in diameter. It doesn't itch or burn, but is often chapped and I have liberally applied chap-stick to it. (I don't share chap-stick, either.) Sometimes it gets so chapped that the top layer of skin peels off rather easily. Is my lip just really chapped and it's merely a coincidence.? It doesn't hurt when it peels, either. I have no other health problems to speak of except a little loss of appetite which I have carried for about a month now, but I didn't notice this thing on my lip until about two days ago. Advice, please.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Typically, cold sores do itch; however there are always exceptions. You may want to try an over-the-counter cold sore medication, such as Abreva. What could it really hurt if you don't have one.?

also, it is definitely possible for you to have HSV1 even if your partner has never had an outbreak. Actually, nearly 95% of Americans carry the virus; however less than 50% will ever have an outbreak in their lives. also, you do not have to have an active outbreak to spread HSV1 (or 2, for that matter).

That being said, you could have contracted the virus (if that's what it is) at any time in your life, maybe even your childhood. I would be very wary in blaming this woman.Health Question & Answer

You can get cold sores without someone "giving" it to you. Children often get them after their immunity is compromised from an illness.Health Question & Answer
