Mucus in throat, am I losing my voice again ?!

Question: Mucus in throat, am I losing my voice again .?
Two days ago I went to the doctor for my throat. My throat was dry, and sore. It occasionally felt scratchy. I had a strep test in case, and it was negative. The doctor passed it off as a throat virus.

Now I have developed some mucus in my throat/deep nasal cavity (it's too far back to cough it up.) My friends say my voice sounds funny. They say it sounds like my nose is all stuffy, but the weird thing is.. it's not ! I can breathe just fine, it isn't stuffed/runny at all. But I can't taste things.. or smell things either. I can only faintly taste or smell.

So far I've last my voice at least once every year, for the past three years. Twice due to bronchitis, another I'm not quite sure ( I was in Vietnam at the time ) I really hope I don't lose my voice again.

What do you think what's wrong .? I'm pretty sure it's not an allergy. The only allergy I have is with rain ( I get headaches ) but that's about it.Health Question & Answer

Answers:
Chronic bronchitis is most often due to cigarette smoking. If you smoke, that's probably the cause. Smoking leaves you more susceptible to infection as well. Acute bronchitis is usually due to viral/bacterial infection; if this is the case, you should be moving towards recovery. When you are sick, or feel that your voice is giving out, you may want to speak less. Talking puts more stress/trauma on your vocal cords, and lengthens the time to recovery.

You may want to try Guaifenesin (Mucinex), which is used by opera singers to prevent voice loss. This medication will help lubricate the vocal cords. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids.

Good luck!Health Question & Answer
