I have hypothyroidism. Is there anything I can do about the weight?!
Question: I have hypothyroidism. Is there anything I can do about the weight.?
My doctors just figured out that I have hypothyroidism. It explains why the past two years I've been catching everything, having asthma attacks just about everyday, why my eczema & allergies are so bad, I've been so tired, etc. Well, I'm turning 15 in a little less than a month & I also been gaining weight only in my stomach area and no where else. I exercise regularly & eat right & I'm hoping with my new meds & vitamins I'll finally start losing weight.
Is there anything I can do to speed up the weight process a little.? I mean I'm not overweight, but with my size & shape it looks a little funky & it bothers me.
also, my stomach is trying to form abs, but it can't because of the hypothyroidism x) lol
& please no diets, I'm only a teenager. lol Health Question & Answer

Have patience - things will probably improve, but it takes a few months, and it might always be a little harder for you to control weight than someone with a normal thyroid. The main problem that you need to overcome is resetting your metabolism to a higher rate and this is easier said than done, even with the thyroid medication. There are at least four things that are critical: (1) take your medication in the evening or in doses split between evening and morning, but do not take it only in the morning; (2) get daily aerobic exercise for at least 20 minutes per day; (3) avoid snacks that contain carbohydrates, and minimize carbohydrates at meals; and (4) cap your total caloric intake and pay attention to the calories you eat.

I have hypo too. It started with hyper. They treated me with radio-active iodine and it shrank some of my thyroid, several years later it went to hypo. Now I have to take synthroid the rest of my life, no problem. The problem is my weight and at my age all I can do is exercise and watch how much I eat, so I suggest the same for you. You'll be fine if you follow your doctor's orders.Health Question & Answer
