The distinction between these two things is pretty easy - with cardiac arrest the person stops breathing. Epilepsy does not affect breathing. First aid for cardiac arrest is called CPR - the instructions are at the link: Health Question & Answer

Interesting question!
Cardiac arrest is the absence of a persons pulse. Signs prior to the arrest may be chest pain, weakness, nausea, sweat, paleness, etc.

If you found someone in this distress, you would first call 911. If they had no pulse, no breaths, the ratio of compressions to breaths is 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths. They are now teaching the public to just do compressions to get the blood circulating faster.

In any of your situations listed in your question, call 911, stay with the person, protect their safety and if needed...give compressions until help arrives.
They american red cross teaches basic first aid and CPR classes across the country.
I prefer American Heart for CPR courses it will give you a 2 year certification. Health Question & Answer

Cardiac arrest is a life and death emergency, every second counts.Cardiac arrest strikes immediately and without warning while heart attack has pre attack symptoms. Here are the signs :Sudden loss of responsiveness ( no responce on tapping the shoulders ),There is no normal breathing (the victim does not take normal breath when you tilt the head up and check for at least 5 seconds )Understandably, you can't feel the pulse also. Immediately call the emergency services. In the mean time give mouth to mouth respiration and chest compressions. EPILEPTIC symptoms depend upon where in the brain the Attack has begun. Some important symptoms are :1.Convulsions 2.Short periods of black out or confused memory 3.occasional fainting spells with or without loss of control on bladder or bowel 4.Episodes of blank staring 5.Sudden fall 6.Dazed behavior 7.Muscle jerks of arms, legs or body.None of these or other symptoms have any resemblance with those of cardiac arrest.Health Question & Answer
