BK is right.

The chance of contracting HIV from the single experience you describe is quite low.
75% of people test positive (if they are infected) by 17 days after being infected
95% by two months
well over 99% at the 3 month mark.

Get tested 3 months post exposure and be confident with the result. HIV does not lay dormant (EVER), though HIV can have no outward symptoms for many years, a person will have tested positive by 3 months.

The 6 month mark is mentioned because in rare cases if a person has a preexisting immune dysfunction (cancer chemo/radiation, high dose corticosteroids after organ transplantation, etc) it can take up to 6 months for them to test positive as their immune systems can take a bit longer to respond. Chances are you don't fit that bill.

A negative test at 3 months is considered definitive.

And ps. the majority of people who responded have no idea what they are talking about.Health Question & Answer

Hi,

Although your test came back negative it does not necessarily mean you are in the clear. It can take up to three months after infection with HIV before the antibodies show up in your blood. These three months are called the window period. A test done before these three months or over isn't reliable because a blood test may find no antibodies and so you will appear free of HIV, even though the reality is that you have been infected and could pass HIV on to others. If you have a test three months after you've run the risk of getting HIV and no antibodies are found the result is said to negative and you are almost certain not to have HIV. But if you take risks again you could become HIV positive later on. A negative HIV test doesn't protect you from getting infected in the future.

I hope this information is helpful to you, good luck with the test xHealth Question & Answer

I understand why you are freaking out but the odds are on your favour. The chances of contracting HIV from a single episode of vaginal sex is estimated around 1 in 1000. This is considering that he wsa HIV positive (which I am not sure if he was). So even if he was, the chances are very slim. Not zero but slim. Remember that HIV is not very easy to catch.

Your test at 3 weeks is not useless. Around 50-60% of infected people test positive by this time. It is not 100% but it is a good indication. Test at 6-8 weeks as almost all infected people test positive by this time and then confirm it with a 3 months conclusive test. I think you can expect a negative result based on this brief and single exposure.

Good luck and keep us posted if you can.Health Question & Answer

Your risk from a single penetration if there was no blood or open sores on either of you is very low.

Unfortunately, low does not mean no risk so you should continue with your plan to get tested. Getting tested at 3 weeks is a good idea and repeating as recommended by your doctor is a good plan. If you test negative at 6 months then you are clear for this episode...it does not sit dormant and undetectable just to strike you later. Health Question & Answer

3 weeks is a lil to soon to get a accurate test result you have to wait around 9 weeks or so or even 90 days altogether to know the complusive test result! Some people in rare cases usually dont show up hiv infection in there blood stream till 6-12 months it just depends when your blood detects the infection.! If you did't know this partner hiv status you can get him put behind bars for giving you a deadful virus such as this one. But if you knew about it when you were having unprotected sex with him then thats a different story the law cant help you at all cause you put your ownself at risk when u already do know his status.I would be freaking out my own self as well as you !!!!!!Health Question & Answer

Ok, don't freak out. The chances of you definitely having it are not high. But they are there. Chances of passing it increase with duration of the penetration and factors such as chances of tearing of skin and such.
You have to wait 3-6 months for the incubating period to be sure though.

So relax-there's a very good chance you are fine. HOWEVER- what the hell are you doing.? Why would you do something like that.? Use protection, especially if you know he is sick!!!
Use it always! Your partner may not even know if he is sick.

also, the idiot who said you probably have aids is retarded. You don't get AIDS from people. You get HIV. And you don't definitely get it everytime you are exposed. There's a chance he may never have passed the virus to you. There's a chance your body may have had virus on you but there was no entrance into your blood stream.

Jsut relax, but go to your doctor.Health Question & Answer

Well the chances are not usually 100% that you will get it, even without a condom...it is best passed through the blood, however, your sexual juices could have carried it over. But as I said there is still a good chance you may not have contracted it.

There is something called the window period I believe....it is up to 3 or 6 months where you may have contracted it, but they could not detect it with tests.

Look it up. And I would get tested again. My prayers are with you, I've had that scare before.Health Question & Answer

Get tested at 3 months and 6 months and to be on the safe side, I would get tested again at the one year mark.

I'm not going to beat you up about this, I'm assuming you are already doing that to yourself, but please wise up and take better care of yourself, once your health is gone, there is no getting it back.Health Question & Answer

You can get HIV from exposure to Blood, Seimen, and Barf. (yes, barf) But I don't know if you can get it from pre-***. (that wet stuff that comes out that is not seimen) You should do a lot of research on this. I hope and pray that you dodged this bullet. Please take this as a lesson. Health Question & Answer

HIV can take up to 6 months to show up on tests. Don't have unprotected sex again (you really are playing with fire) and I would suggest you not have sex at all until you can verify definitely whether or not you have HIV.
Health Question & Answer

3 weeks is too soon. You need to check again and make sure to let your doctor know. Your doctor can start you on meds right away to help your immune system respond. It is by no means a cure, but it is a start.Health Question & Answer
