Pneumonia Shots -- Good for A Lifetime?!
Question: Pneumonia Shots -- Good for A Lifetime.?
I'm 56. If I get a pneumonia shot now would it really be good for the rest of my life.? Do they protect you from all types of pneumonia.? Thanks.Health Question & Answer
Answers:
The duration of protective effect of pneumococcal vaccine is presently unknown, but it has been shown in previous studies with other pneumococcal vaccines that antibody induced by the vaccine may persist for as long as 5 years. Type-specific antibody levels induced by pneumococcal vaccine (14-valent) have been observed to decline over a 42-month period of observation, but remain significantly above prevaccination levels in almost all recipients who manifest an initial response.Health Question & Answer
No it's not a one off, the pneumonia shot you have to get every 5 years, the flu shot is every year, the flu shot every year is because new strains come out all the time where as there are only certain strains of the pneumonia so that's why you only need it every 5 years.Health Question & Answer
One doc told us it was 10 years, and then she told us it was now 5. Your doctor should be able to tell you for sure. No, the doc said they do NOT protect you from all types of pneumonia. Hope this helped.Health Question & Answer
