Answers:
Fatty infiltration of the liver is what it sounds like - there is extra fat in the liver, which causes the ultrasound to show more density (it actually looks "whiter" because more sound waves are reflected) Normal liver tissue would look darker. The focal hypoechoic area is a place where the liver looks darker, so the radiologist is questioning whether this is an area of "sparing" - normal liver tissue without fat in it - or an area of fluid, like a cyst or abscess - because fluid areas also look darker on ultrasound. He is recommending a CT of the upper abdomen to get another look at your liver, because CT can differentiate types of tissues a little better than ultrasound.

IMO, if you are having no symptoms of infection, no fevers, chills or sweats, then the area is probably "focal sparing" and not an abscess. But you should ask the doctor about the fatty infiltration - you may need treatment for that, as it will eventually affect the way the liver functions. Good luck. Health Question & Answer
