My Family Thinks I Have A OCD >:|?!

Question: My Family Thinks I Have A OCD >:|.?
Well before i eat i like to wash my hands no matter how big or small the thing im eating is. I simply just like to have clean hands when i eat that's it. They all tell me that if i do that i can get sick because im not letting any germs into me. Now i'm scared that if i don't wash my hands i could get something. Its getting me so frustrated. What can i do.? Do i have a OCD.?Health Question & Answer

Answers:
You do not have OCD, according to what you described. What you have is logic, good sense and a hygienic view toward eating! What's wrong with THAT.?! Too many people who don't CARE about hygiene are quick to call people like you (and me!) "freaks" or "OCD-nutcases", simply because we're not willing to let a bunch of germs and parasites get into our systems! They're envious because YOU know more than THEY do!

Tell them to go online and search the words "E.coli" or "salmonella" or "tapeworm" or even "Guinea worm" and they'll QUICKLY learn (if they have half a brain) that YOU are the one who's NOT nuts!

Remember, there was a time in history when doctors thought it was totally FINE to deliver babies without washing their hands after dissecting corpses! (around the 1850's). The reason so many women died in childbirth was because these so-called "doctors" were SWARMING with bacteria, which they then passed on to the patients! What was then called "childbed fever"" was really a bunch of stupid doctors NOT washing their hands and passing on lethal, bacterial infections!

I could go on and on with examples, but you seem to have already got the point! GOOD FOR YOU!!!

Now go forth and EDUCATE!Health Question & Answer

No. Washing your hands before you eat a meal is perfectly normal. In fact it's healthy. Unless your washing your hands before you do EVERYTHING with antibacterial soap- then you should be fine. Washing your hands TOO much however does wash away the bacteria on your hands that kill the "bad bacteria". All bacteria isn't bad. Your only concidered "OCD" if you feel like you can't do ANYTHING w/o washing your hands first, and your afraid to touch certain dirty things, obsess ( and i mean OBSESS.) over the order of which things are placed, how they're placed, the number of steps you take, the angle at which the soap is left on the counter...etc. Ask yourself this question: "Do i spend the majority of my time washing my hands.?"Health Question & Answer

I don't think you do, I wish more people washed their hands more often. maybe I wouldn't have a get a flu shot every freaking year if people weren't so freaking dirty. You don't have to eat germs on purpose to get exposed to them. They were on your hands before you washed them so you were exposed already especially if you touched any other part of yourself. You can do what makes you comfortable and wash your hands before you eat. Its a good Habit!!Health Question & Answer

Question:
Was the fact that you washed your hands before you ate the item bothering you before they said something.?

If not, then you probably don't have OCD.
You probably feared germs, which is very different, and probably a good thing.
I have read horror stories about the things that lurk on hands.

also: Once you've cleaned them, do they feel clean to you.?

My understanding of a person who is truly suffering from OCD is he:
a. Never feels the hands are clean. He will wash and wash and wash.
b. He is VERY unhappy that this is happening.

Health Question & Answer

If it were Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) there would be a ritual or pattern to it (like washing your hands three times after brishing your hair three times or something), but others without OCD wouldn't see logic in it. Only you would be able to. Anyone can see the rationale behind being concerned about germs (even if you're more cautious than most), so it's not OCD.

You may be slightly obsessed, but you aren't really displaying the compulsive behavior (patterns or 'rituals') characteristic of OCD.Health Question & Answer

Well, some might call that OCD, because it is a ritual that interferes with daily life. However, you can't get sick from washing your hands, that's ridiculous. So it is a ritual that keeps you healthy. Yes, i would say you have OCD, but lucky for you, it doesnt sound all that bad. Because your hand-washing takes time out of your life, it is obsessive compulsive, but it keeps you healthy too. So, it's almost like good OCD...if such a thing existed.Health Question & Answer

I don't think you have OCD. If you really did, you would be washing your hands after you touched something. People normally wash their hands before a meal, because germs from other things, such as pencils, tables, or doorknobs can carry germs. Continue to wash your hands; the germs your body needs will get inside you by the food you eat (and other unknown ways). Ask a doctor or visit a medical site just in case.Health Question & Answer

I have minor OCD... it's not necessarily a bad thing unless you let it take over your life. Washing your hands isn't bad, but if you spend a lot of your life doing so, then it can be.

I have heard in Biology that you can wash your hands too much and it harms your hands but that's using anti-bacterial soap. Every once and a while you should use it but use a soap that isn't "anti-bacterial."Health Question & Answer

From someone who is majoring in Abnormal Psychology I can say that no one including me has the right to say you do or do not, or diagnose you. That needs to be done by a professional that you need to go and see, tell them your symptoms and they will work with you. It is possible that you are just stressed, that can cause this feeling of rechecking things because you are woried you will forget or are being a little anal retentive. Just go talk to someone, they will or will not diagnose you. Good Luck_ KaitHealth Question & Answer

Washing your hands before eating does not mean you have OCD. If you spent hours per day washing your hands, then yes, that could be indicative of OCD. However, you don't have anything to worry about.Health Question & Answer

It's only OCD if you wash your hands 10 times, after flipping the light switch on and off 4 times, and you have to turn off the faucet at an odd numbered interval of seconds.Health Question & Answer

Let me tell you about OCD. I know someone who cleaned her skin so much it actually became red and sore in some places. But she is better now and cocoa butter healed the scars so no one can tell that she that problem.Health Question & Answer
